- Name Variation: William Abner Strickland
- Birth*: say 1740
- Tax roll*: 1782; Nash Co., North Carolina1
- Deed*: 18 May 1789; Wake Co., North Carolina; Deed Book K, Page 11 -- State of N. C. grant #1124 to Abner Strickland, May 18, 1789, a tract of 300 acres on the north side of Little River on the Johnston County line, including the koon pound and running through the Gallberry Pond.2
- 1790 Census*: 2 August 1790; Abbeville District, South Carolina3
- Land Grant/Patent*: 31 January 1791; Wake Co., North Carolina4
- 1810 Census*: 6 August 1810; Abbeville District, South Carolina5
- 1820 Census*: 7 August 1820; Abbeville District, South Carolina6
- Death*: after 7 August 1820; Abbeville District, South Carolina
- Research Note*: 12 September 2020; Many think Abner Strickland was William Abner Strickland, and was the son of Jacob Strickland and Lucretia Pitts. Jacob's will mentions a number of children and grandchildren, but no William, and no Abner. However, autosomal DNA evidence suggests a strong connection to this family.7
- Research Note*: 12 September 2020; Abner Strickland was apparently the father of Julius Strickland. Julius and Abner both lived in Abbeville District, SC. Julius had a grandson named Julius Abner Strickland, suggesting a connection to the early Abner.
21 Apr 2019 -- The Thrulines feature of the AncestryDNA test suggests that Abner's children included Julius, Benjamin, and an otherwise unknown son: Ebenezer?. The supposed Ebenezer had a descendant, Abner Harrison Strickland. No record has been found of an Ebenezer Strickland anywhere other than New England.
Benjamin Strickland can be found in early census records of Abbeville District, SC. Living near him were Thomas Strickland, and Harman Strickland, presumed to be related. Harmon Strickland was from Nash Co. NC and can be found elsewhere in this file. A Josiah Strickland lived near Julius.
12 Sep 2020 -- The Thrulines feature of the AncestryDNA test now suggests that Abner's children included Julius, Josiah, and William.
All of these Strickland men are presumed to be from either Wake or Johnston County, NC. Further DNA results are needed from descendants of the Stricklands of Abbeville and Wake.; Principal=Julius Strickland7 - (related?) Research Note: 3 October 2020; I'm not sure how this Abner H. Strickland might be related, but at least one descendant is showing up as a match to me on the AncestryDNA (autosomal DNA) test. Abner appears to have an older brother, Joseph, living next door to him in 1830 Elbert County, GA.; Principal=Abner Harrison Strickland7,8

- Obituary*: 31 October 1914; KNOXVILLE JOURNAL, Saturday October 31, 1914 pg 5 J. S. Stuart, more familiary known as "Jube" Stuart, died Friday morning in a local hospital. The deceased had been in ill health for several months, but was only confined a very few days. The deceased was born and reared in Knoxville, and was the son of the late Dr Stuart, who was entensively interested in mineral properties in North Carolina. The deceased was an expert mineralogist, and probably was as throughly acquainted with the mineral properties in Appalachian region as any man ever was. During the second Appalachian exposition, Mr Stuart was in charge of the mineral and timber exhibits. The Deceased was well known, and had many friends who will be grieved to learn of his demise. Funeral announcement later. (Note) Person writting the above obituary did not know the correct spelling of his name which was Stewart)2
- Obituary: 2 November 1914; KNOXVILLE JOURNAL, Monday, November 2, 1914 pg 7 The funeral of J. S. Stewart, who died Friday last, was help yesterday afternoon at the Mann's Chapel. An unusual tribure was paid to his career and life work, not only as the son of the late Dr J. W. Stewart, who served with distinction in the union army, but because of his own services in the development of the mineral and forest resources of the Appalachian region, in which connection he served as secretary for the two first expositions in that division in Knoxville. Mr. Stewart's funeral was largely attended and scores of floral tributes were sent by old friends and associates. The pallbearers were: Charles A. Weller, N. B. Morrell, Raymond Monday, Samuel Eldridge, J.B. Davis and Charles E. Maskall.2
