  • Birth*: 1712; Surry Co., Virginia
  • Marriage*: circa 1739; Virginia; Principal=Elizabeth Chamberlain
  • Death*: 1759; Brunswick Co., Virginia
  • Note*: 12 November 2018; from Tyler's Quarterly:
Sampson Lanier, son of Sampson Lanier, and Elizabeth Washington, was born about 1712. His first land warrant was dated 17 March, 1736, at which time he was doubtless over 21. He appears quite frequently in the records of Brunswick County, as Vestryman of St. Andrews Parish, Justice of the County and Sheriff. He married Elizabeth Chamberlin, daughter of Samuel Chamberlin, as is shown by a bond of Sampson Lanier to Mary Swanson dated Oct. 8, 1752, and recorded, and by the will of Samuel Chamberlin datd Sept. 14, 1752, and recorded. Sampson Lanier left no will and so his widow, Ellizabeth, on Sept. 2, 1757 gave bond to the Court of Brunswick Co. to administer on his estate, with Richard Burch and Lemuel Lanier, as two of her securities.
On November 23, 1757, Edward Goodrich, Isaac Rowe Walton and John Maclin, gentlemen, laid off and assigned to Elizabeth Lanier, widow of Sampson Lanier, deceased, her dower of said Sampson's estate.
A marriage bond, dated 23, July, 1758, on file in Brunswick County, Va., shows that the widow, Elizabeth Lanier, married secondly Cuthbert Smith, and an order of Feb 27, 1759, appointed Cuthbert Smith guardian of Rebecca Lanier, orphan of Sampson Lanier, and one of Sept. 5, 1759 appointed their Uncle Lemuel as guardian of Burwell Lanier, Buckner Lanier, Winifred Lanier, Martha Lanier and Anne Lanier.
No mention is made in these records of a son name Lewis Lanier, who it is claimed was also a son of this couple, but there is a marriage bond in Sussex County, dated Sept. 21, 1778, between "Lewis Lanier, son of Sampson Lanier and Anne Butler, daughter of Thomas Butler." In Clarke's north Carolina State Records, Burwell and Lewis Lanier appear in Anson County, North Carolina, the first as a witness in 1776 against James Perry, a New Light Baptist, and the second (Lewis) as a member of the House of Commons in 1787 and 1788. [see the Note on Agnes Lanier Davis, also a daughter of Sampson Lanier.]
Of thse children, Rebecca Lanier, married Walton Harris of Brunswick County (Sketch of J. F. D. Lanier); Buckner, married Rebecca Williamson, widow, in 1783 (marriage bond in Sussex). Buckner's will dated May 18, 1811, was proved in Sussex County, Va., Dec. 5,1811, and names children, Frederick, Polly and John (under age) to who he gives the plantation whereon he lives. Winifred Lanier married Col. Drury Ledbetter of Brunswick County, son of Henry Ledbetter, and was ancestor of Mr. Atwood Violet of New York. (See article in New York Genealogical and Biographical Magazine, January number, 1916.) Anne or Nancy is said to have married Major Vaughan, of Roanoke.2

  • Research Note*: 12 November 2018; from James Palmer, 19 Jul 2008:
As a Chamberlain genealogist, I don't know much about the Lanier family.... Sampson Lanier, Jr., b. c1712, Brunswick or Surry Co., VA, d. Sept 1757, married Elizabeth Chamberlain in Brunswick Co., VA in 1737....
Regarding Elizabeth Chamberlain, she is fairly well known from her mention in her father's will and from her marriage to Sampson Lanier.

She was given 149 acres in her father's will.My research notes state, quoting the Chamberlain genealgist, Philip J. Chamberlain's records: "The birth date of 1710 is a rough estimate [other persons estimate it at 1715]; her death date comes from two different Genserve files, submitted by Chris K. Perry of Dickinson, TX, and Louise Miller of Malakoff, TX. Both these persons give lengthy pedigrees of the Lanier descendants."My own research notes list several queries posted in the Chamberlain Chain and elsewhere since 1986 regarding Elizabeth Chamberlain and her father. Her father, Samuel Chamberlain, was born about 1685 (place not stated), and died, 14 Sep 1752, Brunswick Co., VA. His eldest son William was mentioned in the will, proved 24 Oct 1752, St. Andrew Parish, Brunswick Co., VA (Will Bk III, p. 84) at which time a probate court ordered that "William Chamberlain eldest son and heir at Law of the Testator should be summoned to appear at the next court to be held for the said court and contest the validity thereof if he should think fit."

One presumes from the wording that there were younger sons in this family, but their names are unknown.Several possibilities for Samuel's parents have been put forward by different Chamberlain researchers through the years, some of them discounted for various reasons (see Philip J. Chamberlain's 3 Feb 2003 Ancestry.com Chamberlain posting] - thus Samuel's parents and origins remain unknown.

Ref. Chamberlain Chain, Vol. 15, p. 19, query by Sarah Browder, citing 1729 & 1731 land records for a Samuel Chamberlain of Hanover and Surry counties, Virginia - probably the Samuel of Brunswick Co. listed here. Here is what she said: "The Surry Co., VA D & W 1730-38 p. 502 mentions Thomas Chamberlayne of Briston (I took to mean ENG.).The D & W 1715-30 p. 983 an indenture 10/10/1729; Richard Ledbetter of Brunswick Co., VA to Samuel Chamberlain of Hanover Co., VA, gent. for Lb. 20 sterling, a tract of land on N. side of Meherrin River in Co. of Surry, 220 acres of land recorded 10/15/1729.I feel sure he is the same due to the location. In Cavaliers and Pioneers, p. 408, a Samuel is listed in Surry rec. 400 acres Prince George Co., VA on both side of Arthur's SW; 17 Sep 1731.I feel this is poss. the father of Elizabeth, but not sure need help!!"1

He first appears in contemporary records as a "Tithable" in the upper end of Surry County above Stony Run in 1701. He was married some time around 1706 in Surry County to Elizabeth Washington, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Jordan) Washington. She was born about 1683 in Surry County, Virginia.
Richard Washington's will, dated November 9, 1724, leaves 200 acres of land to his daughter Elizabeth Lanier, "land where she now lives"; he leaves to his son-in-law, Sampson Lanier, 200 acres lying in the Isle of Wight.

Richard mentions his daugher Elizabeth Lanier, and son-in-law Sampson Lanier and his five Lanier grandchildren: Arthur, Thomas, Lemuel, Sampson, and Richard. Sampson later had two other children, Elizabeth, who married George Burch, and James Lanier.

On March 23, 1732, Sampson Lanier sold the above 200 acres to the Vestry of Nottingham Parish, now Southampton County. Sampson Lanier died about May 15, 1743 in Brunswick County, Virginia.

"....John Lanier Was lilving in that part of Charles City County, afterwards known as Prince George, as early as 1676. In 1683 a land warrant was issued to him and Peter Wycke for 482 acres, located in the Parish of Westover, on the south side of James River. Most of the records of Prince George were lost during the Civil War, but fortunately the volume containing his will has been preserved. He was born about 1655 and died between Jan. 5, 1717-18, when his will was dated, and April 14, 1719 when a little more than a year later his will was probated.
His children as named in his will, were (1) Robert, to whom he gave one shilling; (2) John to whom he gave one shilling; (3) Sampson, to whom he gave twelve shillings; (4) Sarah Brewer, to whom he gave a cow or heiffer of 3 years old; (5) Nicholas, to whom he gave all the land he now lives upon and all his lands on the otterdams, and all his movable and unmovable property. He made his son Nicholas executor, and gave to his grandson John Lanier, "the son of Nicholas, my son," a feather bed and bolster, and blankets, and rug, all lnew and good and a small gunn well fixed, two pewter dipers and basin, one chest with lock and key and six spoons, one iron pott and pott-hooks, and frying pann and a small pair of Stillyars, two combs, a young horse of three years old and three sheep."1
