George Washington Griffin1

  • (household member) 1860 Census: 1 June 1860; Randolph Co., Alabama; Principal=Martha (?)2
  • Marriage*: circa 1876; Principal=Hester Ann Kitchens3
  • 1880 Census*: 1 June 1880; Lineville, Clay Co., Alabama4
  • Death*: 24 April 1921; Lineville, Clay Co., Alabama1
  • Note: 18 January 2019;      What may not be immediately clear, but appears to be the case, is that Martha Griffin, George Washington's grandmother, was the widow of Thomas Griffin of 1850 Tallapoosa county, Alabama. Thomas Griffin was born about 1782, served in the War of 1812, and died near Daviston in Tallapoosa county. He may have fought in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend.
Thomas's widow, Martha, appears in the 1860 census of Randolph county, with her daughter Mary A., and Mary A.'s son George, who is presumably George Washington Griffin. It lists his middle initial as "G" instead of "W," but when one looks at all the evidence, one can only conclude that this has to be the correct George. For one thing, he is the only George Griffin of the right age to be George Washington, in the entire 1860 Alabama census. And George Washington leaves abundant evidence of his connections to his mother Mary A. and grandmother Martha.
I had a great uncle, Thomas Jackson, from Tallapoosa, and he was being kidded in school about his middle name, "Gamble," a family name. So he changed it to "Stonewall." So be became Thomas Stonewall Jackson in adulthood. Something similar may have happened to George. Maybe his middle name was a family name he didn't like, so he changed it to "Washington."
In looking at census records, Martha, the mother of Mary A., must have been the widow of Thomas Griffin, by the process of elimination. She was in the 1880 census of Lineville, Clay county, Alabama, right were George W. and family lived, and was living with her daughter Mary A. Griffin. She claimed to be 101 years old. She may have been a few years younger than that, but that's close to correct. She does not appear to be buried with her husband Thomas near Daviston, and I have not yet found her grave in Lineville either.
As for who the father of George W. Griffin was, and the wife of Mary A., that is a question which will require further research. He must have died at a young age, as he was not with Mary A. and George in 1860.
As for Thomas and Martha Griffin, they had several children, not all of whom are documented. More research needs to be done on Thomas.
As for Robert Griffin and Mary Ann (Wise) Griffin, that was another but completely unrelated Mary A. Griffin who also lived in Lineville. I could understand how the two could be confused. But I have the Bible record of Robert Griffin, and he did not have a son named George. I'm still in touch with all branches of his family, and descend from his son William Henry.     ; Principal=Mary A. Griffin5
