Benjamin moved from King George County Virginia with his parents to Prince William County Virginia around 1739-1740. In 1747, he was listed on a Ditigin [Dettingen] Parish, Prince William County list of tithabels living with his father Patrick Sr. Also on this list, but in separate households were his older brothers Patrick Jr, Robert, and James, who had inherited land from their father Patrick. Benjamin, being one of the younger sons did not inherit land from his father. After marrying Mary, Benjamin continued to live in Prince William County until the 1780's, when he moved to Fauquier County Virginia.
Benjamin and Mary had 9 known children, all born in Prince William County: (1) Siers, born 4 April 1753, died October 1835 in Hampshire County, Virginia, married Miriam McMillion; (2) Benjamin Jr, born 1755, died 1842 in Nichols County Virginia, married Nancy McMillion, served in Revolutionary War; (3) William, born 1756, died 1789-1793 in Fayette County Kentucky, first married Elizabeth Fitzgerald, then Stacy Fitzgerald; (4) David, born 22 May 1760, died 12 July 1839 in Clinton County Ohio, married Lettice Wyatt; (5) Mary, my ancestor; (6) Gilson, born 1763, died after 1850 in Indiana, married Sarah Thomas; (7) Samuel, born 1766; (8) Jesse, born 1766-1767, died about 1823 in Scott County Kentucky, married Lidda Martin; and (9) Joel, born 1769-1770, died after 1850 in Nichols County Virginia.

Biography*: 28 September 2018; James Terrell Smith is the son of William Slade Smith and Edna unknown (some say Hollifield, others Webb). He was born in Rutherford county. He inherited 100 acres of land from his father upon the latter's death in 1858.

James married Martha Jones and they are the parents of Sidney, Malinda, William, Jane, James Webster "Webb", Sarah, Clarinda, (Reverend) John Walton Garner and Mary Vandora Smith (Sisk).

James was admitted to the asylum in the mid-1880s and died soon thereafter.²
