  • Death*: December 1755; Lunenburg Co., Virginia1
  • Biography*: 29 May 2019; Lunenburg Co., Virginia; Richard Brooks IV is only mentioned in the records after the family left Louisa and went to Lunenburg. He died in December 1755. The court appointed his wife Susanna as the administratrix of his estate, and directed that an inventory be made of his personal property and slaves. No land was mentioned in the court order. Susanna made bond, and David Gentry was one of the guarantors. The value of his personal property, with no slaves mentioned in the report, was twenty-seven pounds, five shillings and three pence -- not very much.1

  • Birth*: between 1728 and 1730; Hanover Co., Virginia1
  • Marriage*: say 1750; Hanover Co., Virginia; Principal=Elizabeth Embry1
  • Death*: after 1764; Mecklenberg Co., Virginia1
  • Biography*: 29 May 2019; John Brooks must have been born around 1728 to 1730. The Parish records indicate that he was a respected citizen in 1751 by appointing him as a processor of land. He was already a land owner, having bought the 100 acres that his father had given to his sister Sarah and David Gentry. They sold it to him on 22 Aug 1748. He bought another 100 acres on South Anna River on 28 Aug 1752. David and Sarah sold the Dirty Swamp property in 1755 to Samuel Winston, the man whom John Brooks had served with as a team to process land. John and his wife Elizabeth followed the family to Lunenburg by the first of the year 1758, for their deed to Nelson Anderson on January 27 indicated that they were "of Lunenburg County" when they sold the South Anna River land. Elizabeth may have been a daughter of Willam Embry of Lunenburg.

John and Thomas Andrews processed land in Lunenburg in 1760. Nothing more is known about John until 1764, after they had been taken into Mecklenburg County. He and his son Davie were listed with three tithes and 300 acres of land.1

Elisha Brooks

M, b. after 1723
  • Last Edited: 30 May 2019
  • Birth*: after 1723; Hanover Co., Virginia
  • Marriage*: say 1750; Hanover Co., Virginia; Principal=Frances Embry1
  • Biography*: 29 August 2019; Elisha Brooks was in Lunenburg County in 1759, owning land there. The will of William Embry was filed in that county in 1759 in which he provided "to Elisha Brooks that part of 119 acres that lies on the south side of the south fork of the branch that divides our land." His will also stated that Elizabeth Brooks was his daughter -- but Elisha's wife was named Frances, and his brother John Brooks' wife was named Elizabeth, so we may assume that the two brothers may have married Embry sisters.

On 3 December 1759 Elisha and his wife Frances, and his father Richard III and mother Elizabeth, sold 448 acres in Lunenburg. They must have bought it together about the time the left Louisa County. On 2 June 1760 Elisha bought 400 acres on both sides of Allen Creek, and sold fifty acres of it the next day. In 1764, after Mecklenburg was formed, he was listed in one precinct with four tithes and with 200 acres. On 23 March 1765 he sold 600 acres, which he described as "all of the land Elisha now owns on Allen Creek."1

  • Biography*: 29 August 2019; Arthur Brooks owned 100 acres in Lunenburg in 1764, about the time the county was divided.

That he was a son of Richard Brooks III is speculative. There is no evidence of this other than his general proximity.1,2

  • Birth*: after 1723; Virginia1
  • Biography*: 29 May 2019; Thomas Brooks was listed in 1744, along with George Brooks, neither identified. Thomas owned 200 acres in 1764, made purchases of 100 acres and 200 acres in 1765. None of these were included in the 1810 census.

There is no evidence that he was a son of Richard Brooks III, other than general proximity.1,2

In other words, sisters married to brothers. However, research by Willard Gentry posits that this David was the uncle rather than the brother of Nicholas.2
