January Court, 1760 - I do absolutely relinish my power an d authority of executor thereof unto my brother William. Signed by Charles McKnight. The will of William McKnight was probated in Rowan County, NC in 1760. The contents of this will help in the documentation of the family. They moved to North Carolina in 1753. Some say they may have stopped over in Virginia for a time before arriving in North Carolina. He had a 320 acre farm in Chester County, PA and lived there for several years.
Two of his sons were killed in war with the indians or the Revolution.
He was born in Scotland in the early 1700's.
He was with his father and mother when they moved to Ulster, Ireland. He with his widowed mother and her children left Ireland for the freedom of religion which they hoped to find in America. They were possibly in one of the six ships that landed at Philadelphia and Newcastle, as this was about the time - 1727 - they are found in a few records of land purchases and church records.
Came to America in 1733.
In 1734 Lived on a 300 acre land in Caln township about two miles beyond the West Branch of Brandywine. He purchased land in Chester County, PA in 1738, according to deed records, consisting of 326 acres. They must have lived here for a number of years and most of the children were born here. In Carolina he settled in the SW corner of the Irish settlement on 64 acre tract which he bought in 1753 from James Graham. In 1753 he with his family removed to NC and may have previously stopped in VA for a time. He purchased land in Old Rowan County, NC from Andrew Cathey west of Statesville. This land was located between the Catawba River and Yadkin River on Coddle Creek as it was know at that time. He was living there at the time of his death.
(Another story has him leaving with his father and mother from Ireland and coming to America by way of England and Jamaica, where they had stopped a short time. They landed in Eastern VA where they lived for some time, perhaps near relatives also settlers from Scotland and Ireland. Again they moved, settling in NC in 1753.)
Entry C:602 William McKnight, Sr. hoeman to Samuel Tarr and wife Rachel 240 acres on west side of third Creek, originally a Granville grant to William Sr. 21 Dec 1761 , then to William McKnight Jr. 10 Jun 1773 . Witness: Jacob Isaac, and David McKnight. Proved 14 May 1800
He had a land entry in 1751 and survey of 24 Feb 1752 for 480 acres on Third Creek. The grant was not made until 21 Dec 1761 due to indian trouble. The Cherokees stopped the westward movement of settlers from 1754 - 1760. In 1760 about 70 Cherokees attacked Ft. Dobbs, (Now Statesville) for the last time. The fort was very small and settlers crowded within the walls and held off the Indian attacks.
Entry4:607 Granville to William McKnight for 10 shillings sterling 480 acres on Third Creek adjacent William White. Witness: James Coupland , and William Gibson. Proved Jan Court 1762.

Charles McKnight declined to be an executor, and turned that duty over to his brother William. The text is partly obscured by tape on the document.
Transcribed by Lewis W. Grifffin Jr., 28 Feb 20193 - Death*: after 8 November 1759; Rowan Co., North Carolina1
- Research Note*: 28 February 2019; William McKnight's 1759 will mentions seven sons: Charles (the eldest), Thomas, William, James, Hugh, John, and David. It mentions two daughters, Jannet Kerr and Margaret Young. It does not mention a daughter Sarah.
It is likely that Sarah McKnight, who married James McEwen Jr., was William's granddaughter, not his daughter. Further research is needed.

According to the McKnight / Bailey website by DeLoss McKnight, mentioned in the footnote, Jane Morton was the daugher of John Morton (1685 - 1770) and Jane Williams (1693 - 1762) of Windsor, Hartford County, CT. You can find the further ancestry of this couple at the DeLoss McKnight site mentioned in the footnote, as elsewhere on the web. However, I have been unable to find any proof of this parentage. It seems unlikely that a young lady from Connecticut would would have married someone from Pennsylvania, or that a young fellow from Pennsylvania would have found a bride in Connecticutt. So further research is needed.2,1

He died before the families could leave for the new world. His wife and children did make the trip.1
