Biography*: John & Cora moved to Kimberly, AL (north Jefferson Co.), and most of their children and grandchildren live there.

From Lisa Bannister, 2005: Uncle Walter was married before Aunt Cora, and she is buried next to my great-grandparents, Elias & Lou, and Uncle Henry, at Liberty HIll Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. She died young, I think in childbirth. Later he married Cora Mae Pearce. All the children are now deceased, but I think a few of the spouses are still alive, I know Paul's wife, is. I spoke with NIcole a couple of weeks ago. LInda Garner forwarded a query she had to me when she realized we were from the same line, Elias and Lou. Grandmother said it was a terrible death, and that you could hear the bones in his face and neck tightening as he worsened. My brother and I had so many tetanus booster shots when we were growing up, we've said that we probably couldn't catch it if we tried. It made quite an impression on Grandmother. She was about 13 when he died and they had been very close."²

From Lisa Bannister: This shows Grandmother at 17 with her brother, Uncle Tol Kelley and his guitar and their neighbor and close friend, Allie B. Howell and his mandolin. The mandolin was another of Grandmother's favorite instruments. I grew up hearing old folks rave about my Grandmother's talent and playing abilities when I was young. She didn't play much except for the piano and a little guitar when I can remember because of arthritis in her hands and fingers. Aunt Lizzie was next older sister to grandmother! She married uncle Ira Burks, the younger brother of aunt Amy ( Emma Caroline) 's husband, Uncle Albert Burks.

They had two daughters, Avis and Ira Faye.

They moved to Fallkville in Morgan county with Uncle Walter's family near the end of the depression. They are buried up there. I've been meaning to visit their graves en route to see Varner.

Aunt Lizzie had breast cancer about 1960 or so and survived the seven years doctors told patients meant they were cured back then. Unfortunately the cancer came back and took her in 1967 or. 68. ( I think 68).

Cousin Ervin Williams, their eldest nephew, came and loaded up grandmother and they went to Fallkville for most of a week.

Uncle Ira visited us on several occasions I remember after her death.

Uncle Hiram's first wife, Lucy Salter, was a niece to both uncles Albert and Ira I think as her mother was a Burks sister to them.

I just picked up this restored photo. It was taken in the fall of 1907 at Rocky Branch School between Hatchett Creek and Weogufka in Coosa County, Al. My Grandmother is the 2nd from the left in a dark dress with light belt, and her older brothers are in the group as well, and I think one niece, Era. Uncle Tol (Tolbert Neal Kelley 1890-1963) is the one with the really crooked tie near the center and Uncle Henry Kelley is just behind him - rge tall fellow with curly hair. He died of lock jam in the spring of 1909 after accidentally pokingthe top of his foot with afishing cane there in the yard of their home on Hatchett Creek.Era was Aunt Epsy's eldest daughter and is 2nd from the teacher on front row in a light dress. Aunt Lizzie (Laura Elizabeth Kelley b.1893) should be on here too but unless she is the girl next to my Grandmother with her arm around her, I don't see her. ANd if Era is here, her brother, Irvin Williams (Aunt Epsy's eldest son) should be too.

Found somebody who had another (smaller) copy of that old Rocky Branch school photo - and all the names on the back! Note that four of Lou Varner Kelley's children are in the photo - as well as several of their nieces and nephews - all Smith descendants!

Grandmother/Versie Kelley, Aunt Lizzie (Laura Elizabeth Kelley), Uncle Tol Kelley, Uncle Henry Kelley (who died of lockjaw in spring of 1909), Ervin Williams and Era Williams (Aunt Epsy Kelley's children) and Laura Burks (Aunt Emma Caroline "Amy" Kelley's daughter) Floyd Burks might be one of her children too - as I recall but will have to talk with an older cousin to be sure.

From Lisa Bannister: This shows Grandmother at 17 with her brother, Uncle Tol Kelley and his guitar and their neighbor and close friend, Allie B. Howell and his mandolin. The mandolin was another of Grandmother's favorite instruments. I grew up hearing old folks rave about my Grandmother's talent and playing abilities when I was young. She didn't play much except for the piano and a little guitar when I can remember because of arthritis in her hands and fingers. Biography*: From Lisa Bannister: As I mentioned, my Grandmother Lula V. Kelley] grew up with Hatchett Creek running through their yard. Her mother, Lou, watered her vegetable and flower gardens with a bucket, by just dipping it into the creek. Grandmother had a terrible fear of drowning and deep water that she always blamed Hatchett Creek and Uncle Jim Williams for. Aunt Epsey had promised her a walk and a piknik when her husband-to-be, Jim Williams came walking up the dirt road to their home. Grandmother was 4 years old, so Aunt Epsey was about 18. Grandmother threw a tantrum, screaming she hated that old Jim Williams and that she hoped he never came back. Their mother, Lou, (remember, she would be about 45 then and probably menapausal)warned her several times to be quiet. She refused, getting louder by the minute, so my great-grandmother, the sweet gentile soul born in her grandfather Smith's home in Fosheeton, shoved her youngest child's head under the rapid waters of Hatchett Creek and held her under until she quite screaming. Trust me, it made quite an impression on my grandmother, something she remembered vividly 85 years later, when she was still talking about it.¹
