John ? Bryan

  • Biography*: The father of James Bryant has not been proven. One possibility, subject to further research and proof, is that he was perhaps the son of an early John Bryan. . The following information on one or more John Bryans is from Judy Canant, 1999:

To Bryan Research Team: This is what I have collected on John Bryan, Sr. I am not even sure that all of what I have here is for one John Bryan....

    Judy

    John Bryan, Sr

    1. JOHN BRYAN, SR was born Abt. 1625 in Ireland? England? Entered land in VA 1652 (Source: Isle of Wight Deeds, Book 5, p 66, Jan 23, 1725 by John Bryan Sr for love and affection mentions son John), and died Abt. 1711 in Lower Norfolk, VA - intestate - inventory ordered 21 Sept, I711 (Source: Inventory filed 10- Oct, 1711, Isaac Barrington, Administrator.) . He married SARAH in ? Only 2 sons named in deeds - Wm and John.

Notes for JOHN BRYAN, SR: ["Ship List Extracts", Vol. I - (Before 1661), p.122] 2 Jan 1635 'Merchant Bonaventur' London to VA Hill, John (50) Wood, John (26) Bryan, John (25) Sturdevant, Roger (21) Lee, John (17)

**** We are most interested in this John - understand this ship came in from Barbados - as soon as I have time am going to check some of the Barbados records at the DAR and see if I can find this John. We don't have a good date on the birth's of his possible children, and it might be we are missing a generation. There is also an early Edward that we are interested in; however, he was in Charles City Co which is burned. A by product is the Needham family, but we have not turned up much on that. We really can't prove that all the children we think were John's really were. A couple are circumstantial and the rest are just in the right place at the right time and they moved together, intermarried etc. Message from Martha M to John W: . "It is certain that John Bryan left Land's End in England aboard the ship Bonaventure in 1631 and he did not sail as an indentured servant. Unfortunately, for now, he cannot be directly connected to any records in colonial VA. It is, however, thought that he may be the father or grandfather of John Bryan who was in VA prior to 1652." (Bryan study prepared by J H Bryan of Pensacola, Fl) . In placing John Bryan here, it is because I cannot leave him out. It is likely that he did father some of these children though, in his will, he only mentions, sons John, Walter and Samuel and dau (unnamed). We are speaking of theories - sometimes made by prominant people. We do tend to believe the printed word, and if someone printed it in a book it is supposed to be true. I have found so many mistakes in well known books that I have ceased to believe any of them unless backed up by legaI evidence. This tree, as I now have it, is the closest I have come to the truth, and I do believe that it will still change many times before we are finished. Genealogy is never finished, and we will always be finding new evidence. With help from some experienced people I am attempting to find the truth about these Bryans. If those reading this dispute, please let them bring forth the evidence. We cherish truth, and long to see any new evidence. Our minds are not at all closed to change. JPCanant

In John Bennett Boddie's book, "Isle of Wight co, VA" the Bryans were Iisted as being among the early settlers of Isle of Wight Co. Hodges Council (another settler whose family were intertwined with the Bryans and the Hardys) in his will in 1699 mentions daughter Christian, wife of Edward Bryan. An Edward Bryan, who made his will in Newbern, Craven Co, NC in 1746, an ancestor of a distinguished NC family, was evidently a grandson of the above Edward Bryan, for he mentions his brother Hardy Bryan in his will (see Grimes Abstracts and Wheeler's History of NC) (JP C - this Edward was son of Edward Bryan and Christian Council) "As an example of the usual tradition which families use when they trace back as far as they can in this country, "Notable Southern Families" Vol II, p 44, by Armstrong has the following to say of this family, "Munster was the home of the O'Briens, and one competitor for the crown was John O'Brien. Sometime during the latter part of the 17th Century, his five sons, who were under political procscription on account of a rebellion, left their native land for America. Their names were Edward, John, William, Hardy and Council. Edward was the oldest and bought with him the coronet which was his birthright." This however was quoted by the author."

    Subject: Re: Rootsweb Rogers Genealogy

    Hi Lew:
When I update my site on Rootsweb I will send you my view on it. Ironically I believe My ancestor George Roger's was also related to the famous Will Rogers. Will Rogers descend's from John Hell Fire Jack Rogers and Alcie Vann. I have spent 14 year's researching the Rogers because I have Indian from that line.
Some people say John Hell Fire Jack Was Scottish but I totally disagree. I believe his was the Indian Chief that signed a land deed In Bertie County called the Indian Woods Deed Dated July 12 ,1766. He may have been 1/2 or 1/4 indian depending on who his mother was.
I agree with you 100 percent that he descends from your Rogers line , My Ancestor GeorgeRogers marrried Elizabeth Vann, and the Vann's were from the Chowan area. Iam missing a generation but, I believe John Hell Fire Jack rRogers descends from Robert RogersJr. and his son Williamwho was mentioned in his Grandtather's will. Robert as you know died in 1739 in ChowanCounty.

  • Biography*: 6 Apr 1738 -- Thomas (T) Jackson of Brunswick Co., VA, to his son William Jackson, Deed of Gift of 125 acres on the west side of Reedy Creek, joining Ambross Jackson, Tatum. Wit: M. Cadet Young, John (B) Brooks Jr. Proved 6 Apr 1738, Drury Stith CC
    .
27 Aug 1759 -- Peter Jackson to Edward Robinson for £70 "that parcel of Land Containing one Hundred and Twenty-five acres part of 325 Acres which was granted to Thomas Jackson the Elder by Letters patent bearing Date at Williamsburg 22 Feb. 1724 and by the said Thomas Jackson the Elder Conveyed by Deed of Gift to his son William Jackson, bearing Date the sixth Day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven Hundred & thirty Eight which said one hundred and Twenty five acres of Land has since descended to the said Peter Jackson as son and heir of the said William Jackson, deed lying and being in the County aforesaid on the west side of the Reedy Creek and bounded ... beginning on Ambrose Jacksons line ... to Peter Tatum's line ... to the Reedy Creek thence along said creek to the beginning ..." The witnesses were John Clack, Eldridge Clack and Moses Tomlinson (Brunswick Co. VA Deed Bk. 6, p. 389). .
    .
Nathan Jackson [son of Daniel] sold land in Brunswick County to Jacomiah Randle of King William County on 18 March 1760. The deed was witnessed by Peter Jackson, William Randle and Jacob Woolsey. This Peter was probably a son of William Jackson and the same Peter Jackson who, along, with Samuel Jackson, witnessed a deed in 1772 made by sons of Jacomiah Randle to land on the Main Branch of Rocky Run, the same land Nathan sold to him in 1760 (Brunswick Co. VA Deed Bk. 10, p. 165) .
    .
The latter history of this Peter Jackson is currently unknown. Was he, perhaps, Peter Jackson who moved to Georgia? As speculation, consider the following records:
    .
Green Co. GA Deed Bk. E, Page 460: GREENE COUNTY, STATE OF GEORGIA. Peter Jackson and Nathaniel Bell of Greene County sold to Samuel Weeks of Greene Countv. 31 March 1791. for the sum of £54 current money. 65 acres of land in Greene County Iying on Powell's Creek and bounded by Peter Jackson on Graybill's line, and by Henderson to Bell's Spring Branch. Wit.: Henry Graybill. J.P., and Daniel Bankston. Recorded 4 April 1791.
    .
Hancock Co. GA Deeds, 1794--1802, Page 374: 13th December 1793. Peter Jackson and Susana, his wife, of Greene County to John Michael and Samuel Lawrence, merchant, of same place for the sum of five hundred pounds sterling for a tract of land in Greene County on the waters of Powell's creek south of Ogeechee, containing two hundred and twelve acres, it being part of a eight hundred and sixty five acre tract of land granted to said Peter Jackson on 10th December 1793, and bounded by Herndon and Harvey, by Graybill, by Stewart's, and by Middleton's land. Wit: James Orrick and Tunstall Roan.

Hancock Co. GA Deeds, 1794--1802, Page 454: 4th September 1797. Peter Jackson of Greene County to William Jackson of Hancock County for the sum of five hundred dollars for a tract of land in Hancock County on the waters of Powells Creek, containing two hundred acres adjoining lands of James Orrick, Jared Burch and John Week's and Henry Graybill's land. Said Peter Jackson and Susannah, his wife, conveyed unto said William Jackson said land. Wit: Ransom Harwell, J.P. and John Crowder.
    .
Hancock Co. GA Deeds, 1794--1802, Pages 213-214: 2nd June 1798, Peter Jackson of Greene County, Georgia to Nathaniel Bell of Hancock County, Georgia for sum of one hundred pound sterling for a tract of land containing 200 acres in Hancock County, GA on the waters of Powells Creek. Signed by Peter Jackson and Susana Jackson. Wit: Graybell, J.P. and Benjamin Battle. Reg: 22nd January 1799.
    .
Circumstantial evidence suggests that among Peter's children were Peter, Reuben, Randle, and Coleby Jackson, and others. The connection has not been proven. However, Peter and Susannah were the right age to have been their parents, and lived in the right area. Also, Susannah's maiden name was Randle, and she had a brother named Coleby, which would account for the two Jackson men of those names, thought to be her sons. Further research is needed.
    .
It should also be mentioned, that some of the brothers of Susannah Randle Jackson were involved in deeds with a Thomas Jackson. It has been suggested that perhaps Susannah married this Thomas Jackson, rather than Peter Jackson. This writer believes that Susannah most likely married Peter Jackson. But this question still needs to be resolved.
