  • Biography*: William Bryant, b. about 1720, d. 1770 Northampton Co. In 1746 he bought 200 acres of land on Urahaw Swamp. He married Jane (or Jean) by 1747, when she witnessed a deed between Robert Braswell and Robert Daughtree (Northampton Deeds, Hoffman, p. 51). There were several William Bryans or Bryants in the area, and it is sometimes difficult to identify which is which. After William Bryan's death in 1770, Jane Bryan appears on the 1780 Northampton Co. tax list as Jean Bryan, listed next to her son-in-law John Mitchener. She was alive as late as March 1792 when she brought a civil action against James Vinson (Northampton Co. Civil Action Papers, 1791-92, folder 2, State Archives, Raleigh). At September Court, 1792, a jury of view was picked to settle a boundary dispute between Jane Bryan and James Vinson (County Court Minutes) . Jane Bryan was dead by about 1796, when the land on which she had lived was the subject of a dispute between her daughters and her son's step-children (see below). William Bryant's major landholding seems to have been the 220 acres on Urahaw Swamp which he bought February 25, 1746 from Joseph Selly of Edgecombe Co., adjoining Joshua Daughtree, Alex Campbell and other land of Joseph Selly. (Hoffman, Northampton deeds, p. 37). Apparently he also acquired another 100 acres of land nearby, for his will mentions a total of 320 acres of land. William Bryant's will was made May 25, 1770 and proved in December Court 1770 in Northampton County. (Will Book A, part 1, pp. 139-140.) He left the plantation of 260 acres on which he lived to his wife Jane Bryan for her lifetime, and then to his son William Bryan Jr. and his heirs. To his daughter Barbara Mitchener and her heirs he left the plantation on which she lived, containing 60 acres. The rest of his estate he left to be divided between his wife, son William, and daughters Martha and Abigail. As executors, he named his brother Arthur Bryan and wife Jane Bryan. William Bryan signed his will with his mark, and it was witnessed by John Wade and James Bryant.

William Bryan Jr.1

M, b. circa 1748, d. 1785
  • Last Edited: 9 Feb 2007
  • Biography*: William Bryant, Jr., born c. 1748, d. 1785. In 1774 he married Clarky (Henby) Pinner, widow of John Pinner. Clarky Henby, a Quaker, married John Pinner in Perquimans Monthly Meeting, 5-6-1767. John Pinner was originally from Isle of Wight MM, Virginia. She had declared her intentions in 1766 to marry Charles Overman in 1766 in Perquimans MM, but the marriage never occurred. By her first husband John Pinner, Clarky had four children (births recorded in Rich Square M. M).: Joseph, b. 1769, John Jr. and Clarky Jr. (twins) b. 1771, and Sarah b. 1773. William Bryant, Jr.'s will was probated in June Court, 1785 in Northampton Co. He gave the use of his estate to his wife Clarky for her lifetime, then to be divided between his step-children Joseph, John and Sarah Pinner, orphans of John Pinner, deceased. The land on which his mother Jane Bryant lived was to be divided between his wife Clarky and his sisters Abigail and Patty after his mother's death. Joseph, John and Sarah Pinner each left the Quaker meeting. In 1790 the meeting questioned Joseph's sincerity, and he was dismissed the following year. In 1794 Sarah was complained of for lack of plainness and superfluous dress. In 1794 John Jr. was dismissed for refusing to free his slaves. In 1793, Joseph Pinner was ordered to pay Chloe Nichols #5 per year for seven years for maintenance of a "natural child begotten by him on the body of said Nichols," retroactive to March Court, 1792 (Northampton County Court Minutes). Joseph Pinner became a Methodist, his home hosting Bishop Francis Asbury on several of his visits to the area. In 1820 he conveyed property near George, NC, to trustees of the Methodist Church. This property became the site of the first Pinner's Methodist Church (later moved closer to Rich Square, and now closed). Clarky Henby Pinner Bryant died in 1793 and in her noncupative will as reported by her sons Joseph and John Pinner left the land willed to her by her late husband William Bryant (Jr.) to her daughter Sarah Pinner. About 1796, Joseph and John Pinner petitioned the Northampton County Court for the division of the land left under the will of William Bryant Jr. to his mother Jane Bryant for her lifetime, and then to his wife Clarky and sisters Abigail and Patty (Martha) . This land was bounded by the lands of Jason Bryant, Thomas Outland, Josiah Granberry, and James Vinson. Jane Bryant was dead, the petitioners said, and the sisters Bryant were unwilling to divide the land with the Pinners, who claimed Clarky's portion as her sons. (For the petition, see Northampton Estates Records, "folder "William Bryant 178611, Raleigh). On June 3, 1797, the Court found for Martha and Abigail Bryant to inherit their father's land, and denied the Pinners' claim. (Northampton Deed Book 11, pp. 83-84)

Martha Bryan1

F, b. circa 1754
  • Last Edited: 9 Feb 2007
  • (Deceased) Death*:
  • Biography*: Martha Bryan, born say 1754. She seems to have had two sons, James and Robert Bryan or Bryant, either illegitimately or, more likely, by a husband named Bryan or Bryant. If she married a Mr. Bryant, he must have been dead by 1800, when the wardens of St. George's parish allowed her six pounds for keeping James Bryan. The 1800 census lists Martha Bryan with one female over 45, one male aged 0-10, and one male 10-16. The Northampton estate papers for a Martha Bryan in 1813 names an orphan, James Bryan, with Jason Bryan remaining as guardian as late as 1817, suggesting that James Bryan born about 1796. In September Court 1813, a petition was presented to divide 105 acres of land owned jointly by John Bryant, Robert Bryant, and James Bryant, with Jason Bryant being guardian of Robert and James. Bastardy bonds and records are remarkably complete for Northampton, and there is no reference to Martha Bryan. As her sons were co-heirs with John Bryant, her husband must have been a relative of Jason Bryant and John Bryant.

Barbara Bryan1

F, b. circa 1750
  • Last Edited: 9 Feb 2007
  • Biography*: Barbara Bryan, b. about 1750. She married John Mitchener by 1770, probably by 1768. From her father she inherited 60 acres of land on which she lived, as Barbara Mitchener, at the time of his death. John Mitchener appears only twice in Northampton Co. records, first in 1773 in an estate account, and second on the tax list of 1780. (Inventories and Accounts of Sales of Estates, 1781-1793, p. 74, estate of Benjamin Roberts dec'd Raleigh; tax list, L.P. 46-1, p. 3, Raleigh). On the 1784 tax list for Northampton County, Barbara Mitchener was listed with two white males under 21 and five white females. Barbara Bryan Mitchener was alive as late as 1788 when she was called as a witness in a civil action (Northampton Civil Actions, 1788-89, second 1788 folder). She was apparently living in 1790 when the first census was taken, listed as one of five unnamed females in the household of John Mitchener [Jr.] (her son) .
