  • Biography*:      John Pope lived most of his life in Isle of Wight County but died in 1751 an advanced age in Southampton County, south of the Blackwater and Nottoway Rivers on the Nansemond County boundry. On December 11, 1695 Elizabeth Pope, wife of John, was called daughter in the will of William Powell. He had married Susannah by 1705, because on October 25, 1706, Susan Pope was called grandaughter in the Will of William Frizzell of Isle of Wight County. (2.)      In the Isle of Wight County Rent Roll ot 1704, John Pope owned 250 acres of land. (3.) On January 21, 1705/06, John (XP) Pope and Susannah (P) Pope, Planters, sold Walter Waters for 5,000 pounds of tobacco, 200 acres in the Lower Parish of Isle of Wight County that had been bequeathed to John Pope and his brother Thomas Pope in the Will of the father Thomas Pope on August 10, 1691, and that had not been divided in the lifetime of Thomas Pope, Jr.; witnessed by Edward (E) Wood, George (ON) Morrell, and William Jolly. (4.) On April 28, 1715, John Pope, John Mackmial, and John Sellaway appraised the estate of William Murphery, Jr. (5.) On February 27, 1720, John Pope, Jacob Darden, and Thomas Gale appraised the estate of Robert Lawrence. (6.) On July 24, 1721, John Pope, Richard Pope, Thomas Gale and Jacob Darden appraised William Murphry. (7.)      On March 14, 1729, John Pope, Simon Everett and John Cain appraised the estate of William Crocker in Isle of Wight County. (8.) On October 7, 1736, John Pope and Richard Vick appraised the estate of John Davis. (9.) On October 25, 1736, John Pope, Samuel Brown and Richard Price registered the appraisal of John Vasser's estate. (10.) On July 25, 1737, John Pope, Arthur Whitehead and Richard Vick appraised the estate of William Worrell. (11.) On September 26, 1737, John Pope and Richard Price made additional appraisal of the Vasser estate. (12.) On March 12, 1747/48, the boundry of John Pope south of the Blackwater and Nottoway Rivers adjoining Nansemond County was processioned William Hart and Joseph Curl. (13.)      John (P) Pope made his will in Nottoway Parish of Southampton County on January 1, 1748/49, and it was probated on July 14, 1751; in this will he mentions: son John Pope, one shilling current Virginia money; son and executor William Pope, use of the home plantation of 100 acres, gift of feather bed and furniture; daughter Mary Darden, 2 pewter dishes and 2 basins; grandson John Pope, son of William Pope, reversional interest in home plantation; daughter Else Mosely, 2 pewter dishes and 2 pewter basins; grandson Henry Dardin, horse, cow and calf and gun; daughter Sarah Barnes, share of residue; witnesse Isaac (J) Johnson, Nathan Pope and Howel Edmunds. (14.)      On April 12, 1753, William Pope presented in the Southampton County Court the inventory of the late John Pope, of whom he was the executor: horse, bridle, saddle, feather beds and furnishings, 9 pewter dishes, 18 pewter plates, iron kettle, brass kettle, copper skillet, 3 iron pots, chest, table, 19 cattle, 29 hogs and 12 sheep.
