James Griffin I

M, b. circa 1650, d. circa 1716
  • Last Edited: 9 Aug 2006
  • Biography*: A James Griffin, who was perhaps the father of the James Griffin who later moved to Chowan Co, NC, acquired land in Nansemond Co, VA, in 1683. According to Cavaliers & Pioneers, Vol. II, p. 258, "James Griffin, 400 acres, Upper Parish of Nansemond Co, 16 April 1683, p. 262. Beginning at Michael Brinkley, nigh south side of Cypress Swamp & etc. Transport of eight persons: John Ellis, Robert Frank, Law. Tompkins, Thomas Webb, Joyce Axell, William Butler, Robert Cockerell, and Thomas Wilkinson." Deed records and wills in Nansemond Co, VA have been lost, so it will be difficult to learn anything further about this James Griffin unless he left records in another county. He may have been the James Griffin who was involved in land transactions in Chowan County NC in 1700 and in 1714.

John Dew III

M, b. circa 1696, d. 1760
  • Last Edited: 19 Oct 2000
  • Biography*: Captain John Dew, III, Esquire, married Elizabeth Bryant, daughter of James Bryant, Sr., whose executor he was March 11, 1731. He was a member of Capt. Robert Patterson's Company of Militia on Meherrin River to Meherrin Creek on April 11, 1720 (NC Hist. and Gen. Reg. I,3, p.443). On July 15, 1721, he was a witness in Bertie County (idem II,4,,p.616). On June 12, 1729, he patented 550 acres in Bertie County. In 1735, in "A List of Northampton Regiment," he was Captain of a Company of militia in Northampton Co., having removed from Meherrin. On October 4, 1744, the Council at Newbern appointed him a Justice of the Peace for Northampton County (NC Col. Rec. IV, p.713). On July 20, 1745, he patented 200 acres in Bertie County (idem IV, p.768). On July 20, 1752, he witnesed the will of Thomas Powell in Albemarle, and on December 12, 1752, that of Nicholas Tyner, Sr., his son-in-law, in Northampton Co. In addition to land on Reedy Creek, Hertford County, he owned land in Edgecombe County, where he moved before February 21, 1758, when he served on a grad jury in the Edgecombe Inferior Court. On March 16, 1758, he was in Northampton County and witnessed the will of Bartholomew Figures. On March 27, 1759, he was seated as a Justice on the Bench of Edgecombe County Court, and again on March 28, June 26, June 27, and September 25. The inventory of his estate appeared in court September 24, 1760, and on the following day it was ordered to be sold as read. He appears to have been very influential and widely known, as he signs many of the records simply, "Dew." He operated one of the first water mills in the County, it being situated on the road from Tar River. Dew's Mill was mentioned in the Edgecombe Court February 23, 1758, December 24, 1761, and January 11, 1765. The last will and testament of John Dew, III, was made in Northampton County, NC on September 2, 1749, and was probated in Edgecombe County Court in 1760 (Edgecombe Co. Will Book A, p.1). This is from "The Genealogy of Some Descendants of Thomas Dew," by Ernestine Dew White, 1937, Greenville, SC. The chapter on the Dew family in NC in this book is by Hugh B. Johnston, Jr.
