  • Biography*: A Joseph Griffin acquired land in the Upper Parish of Nansemond, VA in January, 1717. His 366 acres of new land were near the Dragon Swamp, and adjacent to John Harrell, Adam Raby, Cooper's line, Cristopher Gains, and James Mouneley or Mulleney ("Cavaliers and Pioneers," p. 199: Patent Book 10, page 356) In July 1717, John Moore acquired 150 acres of new land in the Upper Parish of Nansemond Co., adjacent to Joseph Cooper, Joseph Griffin, and Adam Raby's land ("Cavaliers and Pioneers, p. 194: Patent Book 10, p.333). Joseph is assumed to be a son of the earlier James Griffin I, who may have died about this time in Nansemond Co. James Griffin II named a son Joseph, probably for this brother.

William Griffin

M, b. circa 1676
  • Last Edited: 21 Jan 2012
  • Biography*: William was one of the earliest Quaker members of the Pasquotank, NC, Monthly Meeting. According to Wm. W. Hinshaw, in "The Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. I, p.91, "The earliest men's minute book of Pasquotank Monthly Meeting begins with a reference to a meeting held at the house of Henry White the 7th of 5th month, probably 1698." This suggests that William Griffin was in the Pasquotank County, NC area at least as early as 1698. Since William and James Griffin II were both Quakers, the two men are assumed to be brothers, but there is no evidence for this at present. There was a William Griffin in the 1721 Tax List for Chowan County,NC, who payed taxes on 500 acres of land. There is no evidence of any William Griffin who acquired a patent for land in Nansemond Co, VA.
  • (Child) Birth*: circa 1676
