Jonathan Mulkey

M, b. circa 1715, d. after 1770
  • Last Edited: 29 Nov 2017
  • Biography*: From "The Mulkeys of America"

Jonathan Mulkey was the son of John Mulkey and probably of John's wife, Sarah R. (or S.) Mulkey. Jonathan was born sometime before 1716, based on the assumption that he had come of age by 1736 when his name is affixed as a witness to the will of his uncle, Philip Mulkey.

But we would suppose that Jonathan was born not too long before that time, as one of the documents indicated that he had younger siblings who were still less than adult age in 1739 when they were referred to as orphans.
Where Jonathan was born we do not know -- a guess would be Virginia, or possibly Maryland.

We can only assume that Jonathan lived iwth his family in the Spotsylvania County area during the 1720's when he was growing up, and in the 1730's on the family plantation on Plum Tree Island, near present day Weldon in North Carolina.

Jonathan was described as an Edgecombe Precinct planter in deeds in 1738 and 1739, in one of which he indicates that he inherited from his father the same 150 acres that John Mulkey had purchased earlier from Philip. (The deed from Philip and Sarah to John Mulkey mentioned 160 acres).
One of the deeds shows that Jonathan purchased 50 acres from Joseph Ballard on January 25, 1738/39, and the other deed shows that he sold 210 acres -- apparently the combination of his inheritance and his purchase -- to Francis Harvey of Charles City, Virginia, on February 20, 1739, for 50 pounds current money of Virginia....

The first Mulkey that we know of in Georgia appears to have been Jonathan Mulkey. He settled in Saint George's Parish in Halifax District late in 1762, coming into Georgia from North Carolina. Burke County was created from Saint George's Parish in 1777 and is along the South Carolina border, between Augusta and Savannah.

While we have no postive data to connect this Jonathan with the Jonathan Mulkey who was the son of the first John Mulkey and the nephew of the first Philip Mulkey, we are inclined to believe that he was one and the same. We estimate that Jonathan, son of John, was born around 1710 to 1715, which would place him int eh range of 47 to 52 years old in 1762.

Floyd's notes show that Jonathan Mulkey who settled in Saint George's Parish had a wife, six children and three Negro slaves, and that he was a planter. Two of his sons, Moses and John, must have been teenagers at least in 1762, and adults before the end of the decade.

It appears that Jonathan purchased 100 acres of land in Saint George's Parish, lying on the Savannah River (which forms the Georgia/South Carolina border) from Joseph and Ailee Perry of Granville County, South Carolina, granted August 2, 1763, with the deed dated May 16, 1765.

The "Colonial Records of the State of Georgia, Volume IX, page 205, state that before the Governor and Council of Georgia in September 1764, there was "Read a petition of Jonathan Mulkey setting forth that he had been about two years in the Province, had purchased 100 acres of land in Halifax District, whereon he was settled, had had no land granted him and was desirous to obtain land, having a wife, six children and three negroes. Therefore praying for 200 acres partly on the side and partly on the back of his purchased land in Halifax District aforesaid."

"Resolved that on the condition and the Prayer of the said Petition is granted."

Later, Jonathan Mulkey asked for more land and was granted 329 acres in Saint George's Parish in April 1765 (see page 324 of "Colonial Records").

In April 1767 Jonathan Mulkey's petition for 1,000 acres of pine land in Saint George's Parish was read (Volume 10, page 131). The petition was renewed in January 1768 (page 388). In May 1768 (page 485) and again in May 1769, when the petition was granted (page 767). In June 1769 the Governor signed a grant for 1,000 acres in Saint George's Parish (page 789).

In December 1769, Jonathan Mulkey of Saint George's Parish was summoned to appear at court in Savannah, Georgia. He with others failed to appear. Each one was ordered fined four pounds sterling, according to the "Georgia Gazette," dated Wednesday, January 10, 1770.1
