Lew,
I have a copy of anold photo (attached)that was in the possession of my aunt Jodie DeLoach Bonner. The man in the photo is believed to be a brother of my 1G grandmother Margery Anne Stewart. Nobody knows for sure who he is.
From Lew Griffin: based on clothing styles, if this was a son of William Stewart, then it must have been his oldest son, James Perry Stewart. The clothing appears to be from the 1850's, or even the late 1840's.2,3 - Marriage*: 3 January 1854; Chambers Co., Alabama; George S. Emory, J. P., John Russell, L. S.; Principal=Mary Russell

- Obituary*: 1 April 1908; KNOXVILLE JOURNAL: Wednesday, April 1, 1908 pg 8 DR. J.W. STEWART DROPS DEAD
WHILE WALKING THROUGH LOBBY OF THE IMPERIAL
STRICKEN BY APOPLEXY - WAS FOR MANY YEARS A RESIDENT OF KNOXVILLE
Dr. J. W. Stewart, of Lineville, N.C., a former medical practitioner of this city, died suddenly of apoplexy at the Hotel Imperial at 1:15 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Dr. Stewart had just entered the hotel passing through the lobby to the toilet room when he was stricken, falling apparently unconscious. He was carried to a room on the first floor of the hotel, and Dr. W. W. Nash, who happened to be at the front of the hotel was called to his side but he was dying when the medical aid reached him, expiring within a very fiw minutes after Dr. Nash was called and probably within ten or fifteen minutes from the time he fell. Not ten minutes before he was stricken, Dr. Stewart had left C. A. Weller, of this city at the latter's office and walked directly to the hotel. When he left Mr. Weller, he was aparently in the best of health and had been enjoying such a state of health ever since he came to Knoxville some ten days ago. Dr. Stewart was seventy-three years of age and was well known in this city. He lived here for many years, practicing his profession but retired from the practice in 1899 and went to Lineville and became interested in mineral properties in North Carolina. He came to Knoxville on business with Mr Weller who he left but a few minutes before he fell a victim to apoplexy. He had been stopping while in this city with C. F. Maskall, a well known jeweler, at the latter's resicence, corner of Park Avenue and Florida Street. Dr. Stewart was a veteran of the union army and while in Knoxville several years ago was prominent in G. A. R. circles. His remains were removed to the undertaking establishment of E. B. Mann & Co., where they are being held awaiting instructions from the widow and son, J. A. Stewart, who are in Linville. Dr. Stewart is survived by the widow and son and a sister, Mrs. O. B. Monday, of this city.5 - Biography*: 22 October 2018; John Wesley Stewart was born January 15, 1835, and died March 31, 1908 in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee. He married Albinah “Annie” Emory on May 19, 1859 in Chambers County, Alabama and they were married by B.F. Holladay, JP. He stated their marriage record was in the Probate Court in Lafayette, Chambers County, Alabama. He stated he had one child living which was Jube Sheridan Stewart, born June 14, 1867, and was a citizen of Knoxville, Tennessee.
John W Stewart enlisted in the 1st Alabama Cavalry, USV on August 19, 1864 as an Assistant Surgeon, in Rome, Georgia at age 28. On January 21, 1865, he was shown on detached service in the 5th Kentucky Cavalry. On April 18, 1865, he was shown as on detached service in the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Cavalry Division. He was mustered out on October 20, 1865, with the remainder of the regiment.
His personal description was shown as 6’ tall, fair complexion, light hair and blue eyes. It stated that while a member of the 1st Alabama Cavalry, USV, in the service and in the line of his duty, at or near a place called Savannah, State of Georgia, on or about the Month of January 1865, he contracted a severe cold resulting from exposure resulting Catarrh of head, eyes and Rheumatism, caused from exposure. Also, while in the line of his duty he contracted malarial poisoning caused from exposure and impure water.
He was a Assistant Surgeon in F & S of the 1st Alabama Cavalry, USV. John W. Stewart was a Physician in Knoxville, Tennessee for many years. He also was on the 1890 Veterans Schedule in Knoxville, and it shows he was a Surgeon in the 1st Alabama Cavalry and the disability incurred was a broken hand. (GMT)1
