  • Biography*: J. W., the oldest son, took over the family's 220 acre farm when his father died, and worked hard taking care of his mother and the younger children until all were grown. Then he met a young lady, Mary Keel, who had come to Jefferson from Vaiden to teach school. They were soon married. J. W. farmed and raised cattle. Later he bought the only grocery store and grist mill at Jefferson, on 40 acres of land. He kept fine hunting dogs, he loved any kind of hunting. At the age of 61, he was deer huunting, killed a deer, had a heart attack, and died.

  • Biography*: 29 April 2019; William Leonidas Cohron was born around 1816. His wife's name was Eliza Jane Baker. She was born on June 21, 1818, during presidential the term of James Monroe. The couple married around 1838, perhaps in Heard County, as it has not been located in Troup County marriage records. They lived in Troop County in the early years of their marriage, and moved to Alabama around 1842.

    They had five children: Nicholas (1839), John or Jack (1841), Amanda (1842), Leonidas B. (1843), and Nancy Jane (1845). Nicholas, Jack, and Amanda were born in Georgia, and Leonidas and Nancy were born in Alabama.

    The 1850 census showed the Cohron family living in Chambers County, AL. Leonidas' name was not listed, so apparently Eliza was now a widow - 32 years old with with five small children.

    By the 1860 census, Eliza Jane had married Thomas Sellers who born in North Carolina, and they were living in Henry County. Apparently, Mr. Sellers was a widower with three children (one of which could possibly have been his and Eliza Jane's). Eliza Jane's three youngest children by Leonadis Cohron, Amanda, Leonidas, and Nancy, lived with her and Thomas Sellers.

    Her oldest son, Nicholas, married a 16-year old named Amanda and also lived in Henry County at the 1860 census. Nicholas later served in the Confederate Army, was wounded, and taken prisoner by the Union Army where he died of his wounds.

    The exact date of his death is not known, but Leonidas Cohron Sr. probably died between 1845 and 1850. At the time of Eliza Jane Cohron Sellers' death on May 6, 1903, she was 84 years old.
