  • (head of family) 1850 Census*: 1 June 1850; Boone Co., Missouri5
  • (Deceased) Death*: 31 October 1881; Wilton, Boone Co., Missouri6
  • Burial*: say 2 November 1881; Goshen Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Wilton, Boone Co., Missouri6
  • Research Note*: January 2009; That Patrick Griffin was the son of this particular Lemuel Griffin is based on circumstantial evidence alone. We do know from his marriage bond that is father's name was Lemuel Griffin. This appears to be the only known Lemuel Griffin who might have been his father. DNA evidence could either prove or disprove this assumption.7
  • (Witness) Research Note: 18 February 2009; From Lew Griffin:
I have taken another look at the Griffins in Southampton County, Virginia. We know from the 1800 census that the Lemuel Griffin there had four sons born between 6 Aug 1800 and 6 Aug 1810. 6 Aug was the official date of the 1810 census, and all information as to ages, etc, was to be recorded as of that date.
If we look at St. Lukes Parish, Southampton County, in 1840, we find only three Griffin men, Patrick, Jonathan T., and James. In 1840, the census date was 1 June. Patrick and Jonathan T. were both born between 1 Jun 1800 and 1 Jun 1810. James was born between 1 Jun 1809 and 1 Jun 1820. This is consistent with all three having been the sons of Lemuel. So James was born between 1 Jun 1810 and 6 Aug 1810. Or else he was a younger son of Lemuel’s, born after the 1810 census, which is certainly possible.
We know that Patrick was a son of Lemuel. The fact that Lemuel had a brother Jonathan lends additional credence to the idea that Jonathan T. was also a son of Lemuel. My reading of the 1850 census for Jonathan T. is the following: Jonathan T, 47; Elizabeth, 30; Joseph, 13; Correna, 15; Mary 9; Robert 2. Elizabeth must have been Elizabeth Edwards, daughter of Peterson Edwards, who was also in the household, age 65. It appears that she was only the mother of the youngest son, Robert, and so was Jonathan’s second wife. Jonathan was a wheelwright, which could be another clue, as his father Lemuel might have been one as well. Often these sorts of trades were passed down from father to son.
And the fact that James had sons John (or Jonathan) and Lemuel, lends credence to the idea that he was also a son of Lemuel. The 1850 census lists James of St. Luke’s Parish as age 58, but that must be a census taker error, since that would make him 23 years older than his 35 year old wife Ardomassa. Perhaps age 38 was intended. Nothing else makes sense. Also, the two sets of twins in the family, born just a year apart, seems highly unlikely, although not impossible. I suspect the census taker had a flask of whisky in his saddle bag, and may have been hard of hearing as well. The census takers were often political appointees, not necessarily selected based on aptitude. So for now I’m going with the theory that the James Griffin in 1850 St. Lukes Parish was the same James Griffin who was in St. Lukes Parish in 1840. It appears that James may have been married twice, first to Ardomassa, and second to Eliza Newton (between 1850 and 1857).
In the 1857 will of Jacob Barnes of Southampton, I would suggest that perhaps Narcissa and Emeline were one person: Narcissa Emeline. Narcissa is listed as Narcissa E. in the 1850 census.
As for research suggestions, it would be helpful if we could find Southampton County marriage records for the Griffins mentioned. Also, a study of the Property Tax Lists for St. Lukes Parish, Southampton County, between 1810 and say 1830 could yield valuable details about Lemuel, his date of death, when each of his sons came of age, etc. These are available on microfilm from the LDS library in Salt Lake City.; Principal=Lemuel Griffin7
