- Biography*: Mary Caledonia Davis had one son, Jerome Brady, prior to her marriage to John Lottie. Rome's father is said to have been a Moon and has been identified as William Franklin Moon by Y-DNA and autosomal DNA evidence. Rome was adopted by his step-father. In 1880 John and Callie are on the Tallapoosa census. For unknown reasons, John changed his name to Latimer. Callie's brother-in-law, John Chisholm, was said to have been involved. No further record of John Latimer has been found. By 1883 Callie had four additional sons. John may have died before the birth of Callie's youngest son, William Clark, as the father's name on the Tallapoosa Co. Register of Births is blank, not filled in by the attending physician. John may be buried in an unmarked grave at Ephesus Cemetery near Fosheeton Community in Tallapoosa Co. AL. He may be mentioned in surviving church records there. About 1905 Callie and her four youngest sons migrated to Oklahoma, and by 1910 or so they were living near Norman, OK, on the farm of Susan (Billy) Wolf, widow of Thomas J. Wolf. Later, Callie moved to Cleburne, Johnson Co., TX, where her brother, Lon Davis, also lived. She died there in 1936 and is buried near Lon in Rio Vista, TX. Lon had died a few years earlier.8
- Note*: 13 April 2018; Caledonia was the ancient Roman name for Scotland. Brittania was south of Hadrian's Wall, and Caledonia, or Scotland, was north of it. It was originally an ancient Pictish tribe, the Caledonii.
Mary Caledonia did not like her historic name, and went by "Callie" or "M. C." Davis. Her sister Rebecca Hibernia, got the Hibernia from the ancient Roman name for Ireland. Caledonia and Hibernia did not have a sister named Cambria, which was the ancient name for Wales. But they apparently had parents who thought they were of Scots-Irish descent. See the Wikipedia article on "Hibernia."

In 1847 she married William Croft Davis there. Martha was a creditor to the estate of Ezekiel Ratchford in 1847. She received $54.00 and $0.50 interest in payment of a promissory note, and the payment was signed in 1848 as received by her husband, William C. Davis.
In 1850 William C. and Martha were living adjacent to Ratchford's widow, Elizabeth P. (Davis) Ratchford. Martha may have died of heart disease at the age of 45. Several of her children died at a relatively young age with heart problems.
Martha and William gave very specific names to their children, as if they were proud of their ancestry and wished to preserve a memory of it. - Photographed*: say 1891; Tallapoosa Co., Alabama; The back of the photo says “Mrs. M. C. Latimer, Sam Lee Station, CB (and what looks like ‘15/20’). Mary Caledonia always used the initials “M. C.” and Sam Lee Station was a railway station along the tracks of the Rock Island and Pacific Railway, in the Indian Territory, according to “Gazetteer of the Indian Territory” online. So way back when, that was probably Callie’s mailing address in the Oklahoma Territory. I’m guessing that she wrote her name and address on the back of this picture, and loaned it to her brother Lon Davis, assuming he would send it back. Apparently, he never got around to sending it back. (smile)
The clothing style and age of this gentleman is consistent with William Croft Davis.
4,5 - (Deceased) Death*: 28 May 1895; Tallapoosa Co., Alabama
- (Interred) Burial*: say 30 May 1895; Ephesus Primitive Baptist Cemetery, Fosheeton, Tallapoosa Co., Alabama
- Biography*: 4 December 2017; William Croft Davis was the son of Col. Thomas Davis who died in Chester District, SC, in 1818. He lived between two children of Col. Thomas in 1850 Chambers Co. Alabama. Thomas Davis named a son Daniel Croft Davis, and William's middle name was also Croft.
William's early life is a mystery but his family may have moved to Tallapoosa Co. AL before 1840. In 1846, a William C. Davis of Tallapoosa Co. mortgaged "a sorrel filly, two cows, a feather bed and cupboard, a wood block, sole leather and upper leather" until Dec. 25, 1847. In Aug. 1846 this William C. Davis bought a small part of Section 32 in Township 24 and Range 24 from James W. Reeves. Reeves was from Fayette Co. GA. The land in question was about a mile southwest of Daviston.
The first certain record of William Croft Davis is his marriage in 1847 to Martha Selina Davis in Chambers Co. AL. In Dec. 1848 the couple's first daughter, Rebecca Hibernia, was born in Newnan, Coweta Co. GA. The birth in Newnan rather than in Chambers Co. is unexplained, but that is what was stated in Bernie's obituary.
William C. and Martha were on the 1850 census living west of LaFayette in Chambers Co. Living adjacent were Elizabeth P. (Davis) Ratchford, widow of Ezekiel Ratchford, and her brother, James Smith Davis. Elizabeth had married Ratchford in 1832 in Fayette Co. GA (his second marriage, her first). Another possible but less likely brother, William Davis, also lived nearby in Chambers Co. This William, not to be confused with William C., although nearly the same age, served as Deputy Sheriff and later as Sheriff in Chambers Co.
William C. and Martha's relationship to their Davis neighbors is unknown. The neighbors on both sides were children of Col. Thomas and Mary Davis, of Chester District, SC. Thomas had died in Chester District, SC in 1818, and Mary left SC, apparently in the 1820's, migrating first to Georgia and then to Chambers Co. AL with her family. She died in Chambers Co. in 1842. William Davis (sheriff), was the administrator of her estate.
William C. and Martha's next daughter, Mary Caledonia, was born in Tallapoosa Co. AL, if her son's obituary is correct, in 1851.
In Jan. 1852, William C. appears as a grantee in Chambers Co. with W. L. Crayton as grantor (DB 10-382). That same day, along with four others, he also signed (as security) the administrator's bond of Ezekiel Ratchford, dec'd. John Ratchford was appointed administrator following the resignation of the original administrator.
In 1858 William C. Davis was mentioned as a patron of the Ripville School District, T23, R25, in the northwest part of Chambers Co.
In 1860 he was still on the Chambers Co. census, but in January of that year he bought land in Tallapoosa Co., a small part of Section 12 in T23, R24, southeast of Daviston and very near the Chambers Co. line. Palmer R. Phillips was the seller (DB M-13).
Davis was too old for combat duty during the Civil War, but served as a private in the Tallapoosa Co. Home Guard, in W.A. Strickling's First Class Militia. His residence was in Beat 11.
In 1867 William C. Davis and William A. Beaks jointly sold to John H. Chisholm three mules and four horses. William C.'s daughter Rebecca Hibernia witnessed the deed, she was the wife of John H. Chisholm. William C.'s connection to Beaks is unknown, but was apparently long-standing, as he had named a son William Beaks Davis in 1853.
William C. is missing from the 1870 census but he is presumed to have been in Tallapoosa Co. that year. His wife Martha died there in 1872 and was buried at Ephesus Primitive Baptist Cemetery.
William C. was in the 1880 census in Tallapoosa Co. and died there in 1895. His obituary in the Alexander City Outlook (Vol. 4, No. 22) states that he was "an old landmark and respected citizen." - Biography: 15 February 2019; Martha Selina Davis was probably born in Fayette Co. GA. She and her widowed mother, Dovey, are thought to have come to Chambers Co. AL before 1839.
In 1847 she married William Croft Davis there. Martha was a creditor to the estate of Ezekiel Ratchford in 1847. She received $54.00 and $0.50 interest in payment of a promissory note, and the payment was signed in 1848 as received by her husband, William C. Davis.
