Mrs. Carrie Lois Johnson, 61, of Shawmut, died at the residence yesterday after being in failing healt for nine months. She was born and reared in Chambers Cunty and had lived in Shawmut for the past 40 years.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at the Shawmut First Baptsit Church at 4 p.m. Officiating wll be the Rev. Maurice Hodgens. Burial will be in the Shawmut Cemetry with Johhnson and Blakely in charge of arrangementrs.
Survivors inculde two sons; Robert W. Johnson of LaFayette; and James A. Johnson of Shawmut; her father, J. Alex Still, Shawmut; three sisters: Mrs. Mel Sharpe, Bushnell, Fla., Mrs. D. K. Wallace, Fairfax, and Mrs. D. H. Barnes, Gadsden, Ala., and four brothers; James Till, Bath, Ky,, Comer Still, Akron, Ohio, Thomas W. Still, Fairfax, Ala. and Alfred Still, Okron, Ohio.

Mrs. D. K. Waller, 64, Langdale, died at 8:15 a.m. today at Ceorge H. Lanier Memorial Hospital, Langdale, following a short illness.
A former resident of Fairfax, she was a retired employee of Fairfax Mill Division of West Point Manufacturing Company. Mrs. Waller had been a resident of Fairfax since 1918, and resident of Langdale for the past year. She was a native of Chambers County and member of the Fairfax Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, D. K. Waller of Langdale; two daughters, Mrs. Vernile Maxfield, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Mrs. Chester Johnson of Birmingham; two sons, Chester E. Waller of Kent, Wash., and Alvin Waller, Hawthrone, Fla.; two sistes, Mrs. Douglas Barnes, Gadsden, Ala., and Mrs. Mell Sharpe of Bushnell, Fla.; three brothers, Comer Still, Akron, Ohio; Alfred Still, Lineville, Ala., and James Still, Bath, Ky., and nine grandchildren.

- Obituary*: say 29 April 2001; Born in Chambers County, Alabama, James Still attended Lincoln Memorial and Vanderbilt Universities in Tennessee. From the University of Illinois he earned a masters degree in library science. During WWII he served as a sergeant in the Army Air Force with a Texas outfit, the 8th Air Depot Group, being stationed in Egypt in 1944. Still moved to Knott County, Kentucky, where he lived most of his life in a log house along the Dead Mare Branch of Little Carr Creek, and taught at the Hindman Settlement School. He became an Appalachian poet, novelist and folklorist. His masterpiece, River of Earth, was published February 5, 1940. Still received the Southern Author's Award shortly after publication which he shared with Thomas Wolfe for his work You Can't Go Home Again. Still went on to publish a few collections of poetry and short stories, a juvenile and other novels and a compilation of Appalachian local color he collected over the years. The children's book "Jack and the Wonderbeans" was adapted for the stage by the Lexington Children's Theatre in 1992. He published in The Atlantic Monthly (first in 1936), Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, The Yale Review; won the O. Henry Memorial Prize in 1939, received two Guggenheim fellowships, honorary doctorates from two universities, was a regular commentator on National Public Radio's All Things Considered. He was friends with Robert Frost, Marjorie Rawlings ("The Yearling") and other famous people. He wrote a jacket blurb for a book with Dolly Parton. James Still was the first poet laureat of Kentucky. He died April 28, 2001 at the age of 94 and had a military burial on a hill overlooking the Hindman Settlement campus in Knott County, Kentucky.2

For R. A. Johnson
Funeral services for Robert Allen Johnson, 54, of Shawmut, were held at the First Baptist church, Tuesday, morning at ten o'clock. Rev Maurice Hodging conducting.
A native of Chambers county, Mr. Johnson was found dead in his bed Sunday morning. He had apparently been dead for four or five hours when he was discovered by his family.
A resident of Shawmut since 1916, he had been in failing health and unable to work since August of last year. He was a member of the Shawmut Baptist Church.
Besides his wife, Mr. Johnson is survived by two sons, J. A., of Standing Rock and R. W. of LaFayette; two grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. C. M. Johnson of Silura, Ala.; three sisters, Mrs. G. C. Harper of Rock Mills; Mrs. L. P. Harris, of Shawmut; and Ms. E. C. Dillard of Montgomery; two brothers, Albert of Lanett and H. M. of Silura; three half brothers, Lon of Cordele, Ga., Will of White City, Ala., and Charles of Roanoke; and one half-sister, Mrs. Bones Hill of Gadsden.
Intement was in Shawmut cemetery with Johnson and Blakely had charge of arrangements.

- Obituary*: say 3 February 1947; Mr. Stuart was born Sept. 27, 1853 in South Butler, the son of the late Wayman and Nancy Skinner Stuart. When a young boy his parents moved to the Liberty community and from there to Butler Springs, then to Pine Flat where he resided until 3 years ago. He made his home with his daughter since the death of his wife. He was twice married, first to Miss. Anne Cohron and to this union eight children were born, all of whom survive. After the death of his first wife, he was married to Miss Frances Gray.
His children are Mrs. M. H. Hill of Greenville, Mrs. W. R. Evans of Frisco City, Mrs. W.A. Green of Pensacola, Florida, Pierce Stuart of Butler Springs, Mrs. T.C. Simmons of Forest Home, John Stuart of Forest Home, Mrs. Mamie McLain of Pensacola, FL, Mrs. H.A. Williams of Greenville. Also surviving is a brother, J.A. Stuart.
Mr. Stuart was a member of the Pine Flat Methodist Church and was active in church work as long as health permitted.
Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. A. G. Ellisor. Burial in the church cemetery with 6 grandsons as pallbearers.
