Simon Daniel III of SC

  • Last Edited: 6 Oct 2019
  • Biography*: In 1765, Simon Daniel Jr. and Elizabeth Daniel sold to William Daniel 25 acres on the south bank of Toisnot Swamp 1. This same deed is recorded a second time but with Elizabeth as witness only 2. In 1767, Simon Daniel Jr. sold to Joseph Daniel 125 acres on the south bank of Toisnot Swamp adjoining William Daniel, with William as witness 3.

In 1779, Joseph Daniel gave 25 acres to Lemuel Daniel, "it being part of the land whereon Simon Daniel [Jr.] then lived" 4. And in 1781, Joseph gave 100 acres to Elias Daniel, "it being part of the land whereon Simon Daniel formerly lived" 5. It is possible that Simon Daniel Jr. left Edgecombe County around 1780.

  • Biography*: In December 1777, William Daniel of Edgecombe and Elizabeth Daniel (presumably William's mother Elizabeth) sold 60 acres on "Litodnot" or "Lightwood Knot" Branch and Deep Branch to John Harper for 10 pds. The land was adjacent to Joshua Bentley, Joshua Bentley and Michael Ward were witnesses (Edgecombe Co. Deed Bk. 3, page 384). This land was on Toisnot Swamp and was part of a grant to William Bentley "the elder" in 1743 (Edgecombe Deed Bk. 4, p. 265).

A while back, I had seen Ellis Bateman's posting on will of Simon DAVID Bateman, and contacted him about why Bateman left land in Pike to next-door neighbor Sherwood Harper (son of Sharrard). But Ellis didn't know either. . Later, in index to Pike deeds, I found that Sherod (Sharrard) Harper deeded land to David Bateman 2-19-1839; recorded 7-13-1839. On same date (2-19-1839; recorded 2-8-1840), Sherod Harper was deeded land from James Whatley. I haven't ordered the deed book on those.

The land was adjacent to John Harper. Witnesses were John Singleton and Thomas (x) Bateman (Edgecombe Co. Deed Bk. 3, p. 401). This land was on Toisnot Swamp and was part of the original tract there granted to William Bentley, Elizabeth Daniel's father, in 1743 (Edgecombe Deed Bk. 4, p. 265).      Jesse Bateman was still living in Edgecombe County, NC in 1785, near his wife Drusilla's uncle, Joshua Bentley, and her brother's-in-law, William Daniel, and John Harper (Edgecombe Co. Deed Bk. 4, p. 265 & p. 281).      By 1793 he had moved to Johnston County, NC (Edgecombe Co. Deed Bk 8, p. 129). In the deed just mentioned, Jesse and other heirs of Simon Daniel, Sr. were all mentioned in a joint bill of sale to Jacob Barnes of Edgecombe County.
