  • Death*: 3 July 1907; Paulding Co., Georgia
  • Research Note*: 13 September 2019; Whoever put up Eliza J. Jones tombstone, thought that Jones was her maiden name. But there seems to be no evidence for an Eliza J. Jones, daughter of John R. Jones, and no evidence that John R. Jones had a daughter as early as 1828. We have found no marriage record for John R. Jones.

In contradiction to the tombstone, we have a (primary) marriage record of Isham Fuller to Eliza J. Jackson in 1849. From strong DNA evidence it would seem that Eliza J. Jackson was a daughter of Samuel W. Jackson, who once lived in Meriwether County, but who by the time of her marriage was living in nearby Heard County, GA.

Eliza is not one of the known daughters of Samuel, which are detailed in letters written in the 1930's and 1940's by his great granddaughters. In my Thrulines, descendants of Eliza are all from one child, and are in the 5 to 7 cM range. Descendants of the known daughters of Samuel are in a much higher cM range, which might suggest that my connection is not to Eliza but to one of her ancestors.

It is not clear at this point why the tombstone says "Eliza J. Jones, wife of Isham Fuller," and the marriage record says "Eliza J. Jackson." If they were two different wives, there is currently no clear evidence of this. Further research is needed.7

    John Wesley Trexler

A ranch man who, through application of the results of scientific investigation, an untiring attention to details, has brought the raising of both sheep and cattle to a high plane in California, is John Wesley Trexler, the son of Henry Trexler, a native of Pennsylvania, who took up his residence in the South. From Alabama, Henry Trexler moved to Mississippi; and in 1857 he became a pioneer in the wilderness of Arkansas, where he died six years later. His wife who was Elizabeth Halsey before her marriage, died in Arkansas in 1861. Ten children, six of whom were sons, were born to this worthy couple, John Wesley being the ninth.
John Wesley Trexler was born on May 28, 1853, in Alabama. He went with his parents to Mississippi, and thence to Arkansas, where he attended school until he was nine years of age. He then left home and went to live with a Mr. Bates in Memphis, working for him on a farm until 1865. Afterwards he went to Crittenden County, Ark., where he continued to work as a farmhand, receiving more experience than dollars for his efforts. In the spring of 1875, when he was entering upon young manhood, Mr. Trexler came across the plains to California, and on his arrival went to work as a ranch hand in different counties for two years. In 1877 he purchased his first land in this state, located west of Red Bluff, Tehama County; and here he cleared the land and farmed for himself with fair success. Later he moved west of Corning, where he also tilled the soil. In 1885 he sold out his home place, but continued to operate the last hyphened named ranch until in 1889, when he came to what is now Glenn County and leased the Mills Holm place, 10 miles west of Willows. When he took charge of it, there were no fences. He has fenced and cross-fenced the place, the later at his own expense, and has devoted its acres to the stock business and to grain farming. In 1892 he gave up his lease and bought 1,600 acres of the Robinson ranch, meantime again leasing the Mills Holm ranch, and farmed both places until he gave up the Robinson ranch. He also leased 5,000 acres of the Glenn ranch, operating over 10,000 acres for two years.
Mr. Trexler has followed sheep-raising with success; but about five years ago sold off his bands of sheep and bought shorthorn Durham cattle, and is now making a specialty of that branch of the stock industry. He is classed with the leading stockmen of the Sacramento Valley. His well-known brand is JT combined, having the appearance of a J with a T top.
On April 18, 1898, John W. Trexler and Miss Grace Flood were united in marriage at Newville. She was born in that locality, a daughter of John Flood, a pioneer of this county. Of this marriage seven children have been born: John William; Beulah, wife of Fred Minge, of San Francisco; and Vernon Abner, Mary Ellen, Roy Anson, Geneva and Edna Augusta.
When the county division question came up, Mr. Trexler aligned himself in favor of the project, and gave up his time and influence to bring it to a favorable culmination in the organization of Glenn County. For some years he has served as a Trustee of the Mills Holm School District, and was clerk of the board when the schoolhouse was completed. He is a member of the Odd Fellows and of the Woodmen of the World. - Transcribed by M.2

    JOHN W. TREXLER PASSES AWAY
DIED OF HEART TROUBLE AT NAPA HOME LAST THURSDAY SUDDENLY

The earthly remains of our fellow townsman, John W. Trexler, arrived here Thursday night from Napa and yesterday morning were taken to Newville where they were given burial under the auspices of the Odd Fellows lodge of which he was an old and honored member.
Quite a large number of Willows Odd Fellows and their families accompanied the remains to their final resting place.
John Wesley Trexler was a man widely known in this and Tehama counties and a man who commanded the respect of everybody in the two counties. He was a native of Alabama and 68 years of age at the time of his passing. He came from a pioneer family and during his boyhood lived with his parents both in Mississippi and Arkansas where he gained his schooling. In 1875 the lure of California induced him to cross the plains and cast his lot with us.
Two years later he drifted to Tehama county and there acquired a tract of land near the then thriving little town of Newville and engaged in farming, a calling that he followed some years ago when he engaged in sheep and cattle raising. In the year 1898 he married Miss Grace Flood of Newville, a daughter of the late John Flood of Newville, and to the couple seven children were born, all excepting one son are with the mother left to mourn the passing of a kind husband and loving father. In 1899 the deceased leased a part of the Mills ranch west of this city and moved with his family to this county. Last spring when both feed and water became scarce he sold his cattle and gave up his lease holding with the intention of retiring from active business. He purchased a home in this city and settled down to a life of ease but not for long.
Only a few months ago he purchased a beautiful orchard and dairy farm near Napa and moved with his family on it. His heart which for some time had been troubling him went quite bad in his new home and last Thursday he had a spell that carried him off.
In the passing of J.W. Trexler, Glenn and Napa counties lost a good man whose memory will be cherished by a large concourse of neighbors and friends.2

The information I have is that Annie was born in 1910 on State Line Road, Heard County, Ga. Sallie Maude was 20 years old and John Denny was 34. Annie was only 3 months old at her death having been born around February 1910. The Federal Census was taken April 21, 1910. I would imagine that as poor as they apparently were, Annie may not have been buried in a cemetery, but perhaps on the property on State Line Road. The houses were not numbered. I remember my mother once telling me that her baby sister died from her bowels "locking up" from eating sweet potatoes. Tragic.
