John Phillips of Richmond Co. GA1

M, b. say 1726, d. circa May 1777
  • Last Edited: 29 Dec 2005
  • AFN*: W4KK-VR
  • Biography*: We do not know the name of John's first wife. Records of Colonial Georgia show that in 1761 John petitioned the GA Governor for 150 acres of land in Richmond County, saying he had been in the Province six months and had come from North Carolina. He had a son and was apparently a widower. The same record shows that in 1764 he petitioned for an additional 100 acres. He stated he had been in the Province 3 years and had come from Virginia. Note that in his first petition in 1761 he stated he had come from N.C. He apparently was in N.C. only a short time. In 1764 he recorded that he had a wife and 7 children. This data is from Richmond Co., GA records. We have another quote from Colonial Records of Georgia 3 April 1964 "John Phillips sons, Hillery, George, & Jeremiah, Wife: filed in Richmond Co., GA."

John Phillips married Ruth Beal Jones, the widowed daughter of Thomas Beal or Beall or Bell, b. ca 1715 and his wife, Ann Christina. (Miscellaneous Colonial Records of GA) Book Y-l, Pg. 373. We find this 24 Sept, 1772 quote, ''Ann Christena Bell of the Province of Georgia and St. Matthews Parish, widow for and in consideration of the love, good will, my loving Daughter-in-law, Ruth Phillips" (Excerpts from the records enclosed).

John Phillips made his Will in Richmond Co., GA 20 March 1777. It was probated 16 Aug. 1777 and recorded in Richmond Co. Will Book 1, page 3. He named his wife, Ruth and children, George, Sophia, Hillery, Verlinda, Jeremiah, Ruth and Mary. Executor: Wife, Ruth, son George and Jacob Beall. Jacob Beall was his wife's brother. Evidence indicates that John Phillips' son George was by his first wife.
