  • Burial*: say 5 September 1922; Mount Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, Straughn, Covington Co., Alabama4
  • Biography*: 1 March 2020; From Benny J. McDaniel:
Gillium Thomas Hicks was first married to Arrena J. Mallory who died in 1863 after giving birth to 2 sons and 1 or 2 daughters. Soon after her death Gillium joined a regiment of CSA troops. They traveled to the Virginia area & were assigned to protect General Robert E. Lee & his group. There were in the room with him when he & Grant signed the agreement to end the War Between the States. After the war he returned to his farm in Heard County, Ga. Nearby he found a lady, Samantha America Stewart who was previously married to a person who was killed in the war. They agreed to be married about 1866 & had their own family. His father William Hicks fought in the War of 1812 & his grandfather Sergeant David Hicks fought in the Rev. War.
Regarding the old Gilliam Hicks homeplace:
The Bennett family (Curtis C. Bennett) owned the Hicks home probably next after S. A. Hicks sold it to her son, John F. Hicks in 1920. By the time of his death in 1923, he had married a third time & had 2 young sons. His wife Ella Beatrice Allen Hicks had no way to make payments, so it seams that Federal Land Bank of New Orleans owned it until it was sold at public auction about 1928. Probably Curtis Bennett purchased it in 1928 or later. The house was maybe over 100 yards back from the Three Notch Road. The Mt Zion Men’s Bible study class was held under the oak trees for some 40 years without a rain out!! The home coming Dinners were also under the trees for many many years, & yes I ate my share of very good food there. A couple of weeks before, the men would cot the grass & stretch hog wire fence from tree to tree with posts & cross supports to hold id steady. I remember middle school years seeing all the automobiles with large trunks straped to the spare tite & rear bumper containing large quantities of food.; Principal=Gilliam Thomas Hicks5

  • (Groom) Marriage*: 25 July 1878; daughter of Dickerson Lumpkin & Balsarah Brooks; Bride=Emma Catherine Lumpkin
  • (Deceased) Death*: 30 October 1886; Heard Co., Georgia
  • Biography*: 16 November 2018; William David Stewart was the youngest son of James McEwen and Samantha Jane (Childs) Stewart, born 13 July 1843 in Heard County, Georgia on his father’s farm. Unfortunately we do not know the exact location of that farm because all land and other records of Heard County have burned in two court house fires and no records exist before 1895. Little is known about William David because of his untimely death at age 33. His death was a freak accident. He was in a hammock and fell out and hit his head, a few days later his died because of swelling in his brain. He left a widow and 4 small sons. William David was a successful businessman and co-owner of the Jug Factory in Rock Mills, Alabama when he met and married Emma Catherine Lumpkin at her family home in Talbot County, Georgia on 13 July 1878. As far as I know, she never used the name Emma, but went by the name Catherine but according to the Ronoake NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, November 19, 1902 it stated Mrs. Emma Stewart and sons Lumpkin and Dee, left yesterday to make their home in Erick, Oklahoma where Marvin Stewart has purchased some land. How she spelled her name, I do not know, but my mother was named Kathryn after her grandmother, my middle name is Kathryn, my daughter’s middle name is Kathryn and my granddaughter’s middle name is Kathryn—all named after this woman. William David was in partnership with a Mr. Talley in the Jug factory. The story passed down from my grandfather, Marvin Stewart who was the next to oldest son of William David and Catherine (Lumpkin) Stewart, was that his mother supported her family by sewing and eventually moved to Roanoke, Alabama. Mr. Talley agreed to save William David’s interest in the Jug Factory until the sons reached 21 years of age, and at that time he would give them $1000.00. This was a lot of money at that time. Luther and Marvin, the two oldest boys did receive their inheritance, but before the two younger sons reached maturity, Mr. Talley either absconded with the money or was bankrupt. I am not sure which, I have heard two versions and have not been able to verify any of this through records. To make up for the younger boys loss, Marvin filed for homestead rights on two quarter-sections of land in western Oklahoma near his own homestead just south of Erick, Oklahoma. He moved his mother and younger brothers to Oklahoma to live on their homestead and prove it so the younger boys would each have 160 acres of land when they reached 21. Lois Wilkerson Nix, 20091

    Lew,

Thought I would give you this update on Charlotte Harper Stewart Allen's daughter Anna Bell Allen who married Samuel Knox Cunningham:
You have a Felix listed as a child which is the same age as their first child William Allen Cunningham. I have talked with a decendant of Anna Bell and Samuel and she ask her aunt (who lived with Anna and Sam and she said there was no Felix to her knowledge) The 1880 Calhoun Co Al Census does list a Felix age 2 months and the census was taken on June 9, 1880 which would make Felix born in April. Well, William Allen Cunningham was born on 28 April 1880 so they have to be the same person. Maybe his nickname was Felix or maybe the census taker just made a mistake.
Also if you ever go to FIND A GRAVE you will find Samuel Knox Cunningham and Anna Bell Cunningham's gravestone pictures listed in Brooksville Cemetery in both Talladega Co AL and Noxubee Co., Mississippi. The G. Davidson posting listing it in Talladege Co AL is incorrect. The descendant emailed her the pictures and Glenda Davidson posted it wrong. Then Kathy (the descendant) posted it herself correctly.
Don't know if you ever go to Find A Grave but I have found quite a few gravestones on that website.
