    Penton - Mrs. Carrie Edge, of this community, died March 9th. She was born November 29, 1859. Our hearts are saddened and we will miss her so much. She was very much beloved. She was a Christian woman, and made friends wherever she went. She always attended her church as long as her health would permit. All was done for her that hands could do, but God needed another angel. She leaves three children, two sons, Mr. Otis Edge and Mr. Bill Edge, of Penton, and one daughter, Mrs. Lu__ Wilkerson, of Pozo, Cal., and nine grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her death.

  • 1820 Census*: 7 August 1820; Rutherford Co., North Carolina4
  • Death*: circa 1822; Rutherford Co., North Carolina1
  • Research Note*: 28 September 2018; from Glen Cress:
    Clator Jr first appears on the Loudoun County Virginia tithables list with his father Clator Sr in the year 1773, the year he would have turned age 16, assuming he was born in 1757. He next appears on this tithables list in 1782, next to his father Clator Sr. Clator Jr served in the Revolutionary War. According to Virginia marriage records, "Clayton" Smith on 14 July 1778 "Clayton" Smith married Mary Hamrick in Fauquier County.
    Clator moved to Rutherford County North Carolina in the early 1790's. On 9 July 1798, he acquired 60 acres in Rutherford County on the waters of the First Broad River. He was enumerated in the 1800 Rutherford County North Carolina census as age 45+, along his wife, age 45+, and 9 children. On 12 January 1803, he acquired 50 acres in Rutherford County on the west side of the First Broad River, and in 1805 he was granted land from the state of North Carolina.
    Clator Jr left a will dated 11 April 1820, and recorded in the April 1822 Court of Rutherford County North Carolina. He named his wife Mary, and sons Braxton and Benjamin as executors. He named his 10 surviving children, including my ancestor William S Smith, and left them various portions of his estate, which included land, stock, furniture, and money (shillings).
    Clator Jr and Mary had 11 children: (1) William S, my ancestor; (2) Elizabeth, born 1780 in Loudoun County, married Aaron Bridges; (3) Minor Winn, born about 1782 in Loudoun County, married Jane; (4) Sarah, born about 1784 in Fauquier County, married Mr Harrell; (5) John, born about 1786 in Fauquier County; (6) Charles C, born about 1788 in Fauquier County; (7) unknown child, born about 1790 in Loudoun County; (8) Clator C, born about 1796 in Rutherford County, married Mary Harrell; (9) Nancy, born about 1796 in Rutherford County; (10) Braxton P, born about 1798 in Rutherford County; and (11) Benjamin B, born about 1802 in Rutherford County.

  • Name Variation: Woodie Burge
  • Name Variation: Woodrow Burge
  • Birth*: 22 March 1743/44; Bristol Parish, Prince George Co., Virginia1,2
  • Marriage*: say 1768; Principal=Judith Davis
  • Marriage*: 15 October 1787; Brunswick Co., Virginia; Principal=Elizabeth Davis3

  • Death*: 1833; Rutherford Co., North Carolina
  • Research Note*: 27 September 2018; see footnote
    5
  • Research Note: 28 September 2018; from Glen Cress:

    There is a Woody Burge recorded in the Bristol Parish Register of Prince George County Virginia as the son of Thomas and Mary Burge. This is probably the same Woody Burge who bought 500 acres in Mecklenburg County Virginia on 12 June 1769 and sold the land in 1772; bought land in Pittsylvania County Virginia; lived in that part of Henry County Virginia which later became Patrick County; bought 200 acres in Surry County (parent of Stokes County North Carolina) on 11 August 1778 and 222 acres in May 1787. Sometime later, Woody moved to Rutherford County North Carolina where he attended Sandy Run Baptist Church as early as 1793, bought land from Sarah Lusk on Wilkins Creek in 1785, bought land from Thomas Murry on Beavour Dam in 1795, and bought 50 acres on the waters of Wilkeys Creek in 1798. Woody was enumerated in the 1800 Rutherford County census as age 45+, along with 3 male children, 3 female children, a female age 45+, and 4 slaves. In 1806 he bought 670 acres on the east side of Second Broad River. He was on the early membership rolls of Concord Baptist Church. He was enumerated in the 1810 Rutherford County census as age 45+, along with 1 male age 16-25, 1 female age 10-15, 1 female age 16-25, 1 female age 45+, 9 slaves, and what appears to be 400 acres valued at $200. He was enumerated in the 1820 Rutherford County census as age 45+, along with another female age 45+, and 16 slaves. Living not too far away (separated by about 20 names in the census) was William Smith, who had married Woody's daughter Sarah.
    Woody was married at least twice, first to Juada (or Judith, maiden name unknown) who was probably the mother of his children, and second to Elizabeth Thomas on 7 April 1821. Two days prior to his second marriage, on 5 April 1821, Woody conveyed 620 acres on the east side of the Second Broad River in Rutherford County, and nine slaves to his children, Alan, Nancy, William, David, Elizabeth, Priscilla, heirs of Sarah, John, Nathaniel, and heirs of Polly. It appears that Woody may not have trusted or liked two of his son-in-laws since he bypassed leaving anything to these two daughters (one being Sarah, also my ancestor) by giving their shares to their children and naming his daughters as guardians of their respective children. This precluded his sons-in-laws from ever having control over the inheritance.
    Rutherford County Superior Court records of 11 November 1825 show that Woody had petitioned for divorce from Elizabeth, but Elizabeth failed to appear, and the Court ordered the petition to be published in newspapers for 3 months. On 22 April 1826 upon motion of the plaintiff's attorney, the Court ordered the suit to be dismissed. On 16 April 1827, Woody pleaded not guilty to an indictment of fornication, but was found guilty by a jury and fined $50. "Wooddy" was enumerated in the 1830 Rutherford County census as age 80-90, and living alone with 2 slaves. The December 1833 Rutherford Court appointed John Burge administrator of the estate of Woody Burge.
    Woody had 11 children, all born in Virginia:

    (1) Allen, born 5 February 1769, died after 1830, had 6 children;

    (2) Nancy, born 24 March 1771, died 8 December 1851, married Andrew Joyce, had children;

    (3) David, born 8 January 1772, died after 1843 in Gwinnette County Georgia;

    (4) William, born 29 October 1773, died about 1855, married Mary "Polly" Cox, had 7 or more children;

    (5) Priscilla, born 22 March 1778, died 24 February 1862, married John Tatum, had 12 children;

    (6) Elizabeth "Betsy", born 20 February 1780, died 29 October 1863 in Rutherford County, married William Reavis in 1816;

    (7) Sarah Elizabeth, my ancestor;

    (8) John Ceasar, born 28 January 1785, died 22 October 1859 in Rutherford County, married three times, first to Polly Green, then to Leah Green in 1817, and last to the widow Priscilla Harrill Blanton in 1854, had 3 sons;

    (9) Judith, born 9 August 1787, died before April 1821, married Luke Robinson;

    (10) Nathaniel, born 8 January 1790, died 15 December 1849 in Georgia, married Nancy Green in 1814, had 8 children; and

    (11) Mary "Polly", born 17 June 1792, died 1875 in Rutherford County, married William Baber in Rutherford County on 1 October 1808.
