  • Death*: 14 May 1818; Wilkes Co., Georgia4,5
  • Probate*: 6 July 1818; Wilkes Co., Georgia3
  • Biography*: 22 September 2019; from Ruth Davis Wiley:
William was a lieutenant colonel in the Fifth Virginia Regiment in the Revolutionary War, and was at the Surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. He moved from Virginia to Wilkes County, GA, about the year 1795, settling near Sardis Church about ten miles north of west from Washington. He died in Wilkes County on May 14, 1818. His wife, Agnes Lanier, died February 21, 1813.

The military grant to him of 990 acres on Long Creek in Wilkes County from the State of Georgia on November 2, 1807, would indicate that he was either Major or Colonel.

This William Davis should not be confounded with the man of the same name, residing in Wilkes County, who served under Col. Elijah Clark and received a grant of 575 acres in Washington County, or with the preacher William Davis, who resided in Wilkes at the same time and whose will is also of record in Wilkes (filed in 1822). The preacher also had sons names William and James.

In Virginia, he should not be confounded with William Davis, who resided in Briston Parish in Dinwiddie County, whose wife was Maxey, or with the William Davis who for many years was sheriff of Mecklenburg County.

Owing to the loss of records, it is hard to ascertain the father and mother of William Davis, but the family had been long in Virginia at the time of the Revolution.

The Davises of the name of Hardaway, Baxter, Edward, Charles, and Joshua appearing in the census of Mecklenburg County (taken in 1792) were members of our Davis family and some of them were brothers of our ancestor. Hardaway Davis was probably his brother and our ancestor is probably the brother William who is named as executor in Hardaway's will.

The records of Sardis Church show that Agnes Davis died on February 21, 1813, and William Davis died on May 14, 1818.

    from Lew Griffin:
William Davis may have been the son of Baxter Davis, who is said to have married Jane Hardaway on 15 Oct 1737 in Prince George County, Virginia. Baxter is said to have died 30 Jan 1750 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. Baxter Davis is said to have been the son of Col. William Davis and wife Marion. To the Editor of Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine:

I have read with much interest what is contained in No. 2, Vol. 3, of your Quarterly concerning John Lanier and his descendants. You havae placed the numerous members of this family under many obligations. I regret that I did not know that you contemplated making this publication, for I could have helped you to avoid a few errors that I see. On page 134 [page 570 this volume] you mention Sampson Lanier and his wife, Elizabeth Chamberlain, and on the following page you say that no mention is made in the records of Brunswick County of a son named Lewis Lanier. My great grandmother, Agnes Lanier, who married William Davis in Brunswick County on August 29, 1769, was a sister of Lewis Lanier and a daughter of Sampson and Elizabeth. The probate records of Brunswick County show that on April 23, 1763, William Lanier was appointed Guardian for Lewis and Agnes Lanier, orphans of Sampson Lanier, deceased. They also show that prior to this, Lemuel Lanier was appointed guardian for Lewis and Agnes and described them as orphans of Sampson Lanier. Burwell Lanier, after he had reached his majority, acted for some time as guardian for Lewis and Agnes. The same records that prove Winnifred, Buckner, Martha, and Anne to be the children of Sampson and Elizabeth show that Agnes and Lewis were also their children. The children all received the same from the estate, except Buckner who was the oldest son and inherited the land, there being no will. The error started with Mr. Nelson who was employed by the descendants of some of the other children. His notes show that Lemuel Lanier was appointed guardian for Lewis and Agnes, orphans of Sampson, deceased, but he evidently didn't investigate the matter any further.
    Yours truly,
    W. O. Davis4

John C. Davis was the son of James Sherwood Davis and Judith Gresham. James Sherwood was the son of Lt. Col. William Davis of Wilkes County, GA.; Grantor=John C. Davis, Witness=Sheriff George B. Davis3
  • (Grantor) Deed*: 12 February 1829; Fayette Co., Georgia; Book B, Page 263 - Baxter B. Davis of Fayette to George B. Davis, for $20, 4 acres of the south end of Lot 12.
George B. Davis may or may not be a relative. He was the Fayette County J.P. and later Sheriff. He is said to have married Mary Gresham, although no record of that has been found. Two of Lt. Col. Wm. Davis's sons married Gresham sisters.; Grantee=Sheriff George B. Davis, Witness=Samuel H. Davis of Fayette Co. GA, Witness=John C. Davis
  • Tax roll: 1833; Fayette Co., Georgia; Baxter does not appear to have been taxed on any land holdings.3

  • (household member) 1870 Census: 1 June 1870; Carroll Co., Georgia; Principal=Sophronia Arrana Davis6
  • Death*: after 1 June 1870; Carroll Co., Georgia
  • Research Note*: 6 April 2018; The AncestryDNA test on Ancestry.com once had a feature called "New Ancestor Discoveries." This feature tried to link you to a common ancestor you seem to share with other test takers. In this case that ancestors were Isham Fuller (1825-1877) and Elizabeth Jones (1828-1907). I match about 15 of the 23 members of these two "Circles" or groups. In looking at the matches, I see that what we really have in common is not Elizabeth Jones, but her ancestor, Lt. Col. William Davis, who died in Wilkes County, GA, in 1818.
Several of William's children lived in Fayette County, GA, where my known Davis relatives also lived. My previously known relatives in Fayette were descendants of an unrelated line, that of Col. Thomas Davis of Chester District, SC. From land records, such as lottery grants, early tax digests, and deeds, I see that certain members of the two families lived nearby, and knew each other.
By combining this new insight with my current information on the Davis family of Chester District, SC, I've concluded that Dovey Davis, daughter of William Davis of Chester, SC, married a son of Lt. Col. Wm. Davis of Wilkes, GA. The most likely possibility at the moment seems to be Baxter Burwell Davis. Baxter was in Fayette County in the late 1820's, and William Croft Davis witnessed one of his deeds.
Further research is needed, but this seems to be the best match with both DNA and paper records at the moment. I and other close cousins have significant matches with several siblings of Baxter B. Davis.3
