M, b. circa 1688
  • Last Edited: 27 Dec 2015
  • (Deceased) Death*:
  • Biography*: Immigrant. (Parran erroneously makes this John the son of Thomas of Ninian (B-NIN-6), b. 1682. who died without issue.) Marriage. In 1712 m. Verlinda [Verlinder, Virlinder] Magruder (B-SIS-22/1690), dau of Samuel Magruder and wife Sarah Beall [B-SIS/1658]. (Heterick I:31) Land. "Beall Town, the original name of Bladensburg, was situated upon a tract of land called Black Ash..which was owned by John Beall. (Heterick I:31) Dates of birth from FMMB, not consistent with designations of who are younger children, and who are minors, at time of mother's will, 1740. (Heterick I:31)

Josiah Beall

M, b. 4 May 1715, d. 1 August 1768
  • Last Edited: 3 Aug 2014
  • Biography*: Lived in area now Montgomery County. Parran has this Josiah as Josiah of John of Thomas of Col. Ninian, however Thomas, b. 1682 (B-NIN-6) of Ninian died without issue. FMMB and other authors confuse this Josiah with Josiah who m. G1736 Millicent Bradley, dau of Robert Bradley, had 9 children and d. 1805 and whose children at the death of Millicent (Apr 21, 1772) are listed in Piscataway Parish Records; however Josiah the husband of Millicent lived in an area of PG County which remained so, while Josiah of John lived in an area which became Frederick Co, then Montgomery. (McLean, p. 18) Compare also with Josiah b 1725 & Josiah b. 1743. 1741 John & Verlinda Beall deeded to son Josiah 300 acres of Easie Purchase, located near present day Ashton; land stayed in family until 11 years following Josiah's death in 1768 when Thaddeus was in North Carolina. 1748 Josiah was officer in Captain George Beall's Troop of Horse, "an authorized organization of militia charged with the responsibility, among other things, for maintenance of law and protection of inhabitants from Indian thievery and raids. Frequently appointed vestryman of Prince George's Parish from 1748 thru 1763. Appointed by Maryland Assembly as Associate Justice and Commissioner of Frederick County various years 1749 thru death in 1768. Also Member of the Lower House of Maryland Assembly for Frederick County, various years, 1754-1761. (McLean, p. 19). Deceased by 21 Nov 1770 when Thaddeus Beall administrator of his estate (Heterick I:33) (FMMB has nine children) Heterick (I:33) says unable to locate references to children other than Verlinda and Josiah.
  • (Child) Birth*: 4 May 1715; Prince Georges Co., Maryland1
  • Marriage*: say 1741; Principal=Mary (?)
  • (Deceased) Death*: 1 August 1768; Frederick Co., Maryland1
  • Burial*: say 3 August 1768; Old Urbana Cemetery, Frederick Co., Maryland; According to the Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots
Josiah Beall, son of John and Verlinda Magruder Beall, is buried in the "Boxwood Lodge Cemetery" located on the old Elisha Beall home called Boxwood Lodge. However, the cemetery apparently has gone to ruin and the new name is called Old Urbana Cemetery which is next to an old Episcopal Church ruin which is only partly standing.
Josiah Beall died before the revolutionary war began, but his claim to fame was that he was one of the 12 justices of Frederick County, MD who repudiated the Stamp Tax, the first judicial official nullification of English rule in 1765. He was very active in the community as a planter, sheriff, constable, Justice and Coroner.
Josiah was born in 1715 to John and Verlinda Magruder Beall of Prince George's. He was widowed and his wife has not yet been documented, but believed to be Mary/Maezah.1
