Jackson, 41, of Opalocka, formerly of West Point, who died Saturday in a Miami hospital following an illness of several weeks.

Born and reared in West Point, Mr. Jackson lived there until WW II, of which he was a veteran.

He had been a resident of the state of Florida for a number of years, and was the Greater Miami Area manager for the Pillsbury Company, Minneapolis, Minn. He was a member of the Church of the Master Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. William L. Jackson of Opalocka; three daughters; Patricia Lee, Deborah Sue and Kay Jackson, all of Opalocka; his mother, Mrs. B. R. Jackson of West Point; seven brothers, L. R. (Brack) Jackson and John P. Jackson, both of West Point, Robert P. Jackson of LaGrange, the Rev. Woodrow W. Jackson of White Oak, Ga., J. L. Jackson of Macon, Ga., Dr. Francis M. Jackson of Morganton, N. C., and Edmund C. Jackson of Tampa, Fla.; and a sister, Mrs. Frazier O. Phillips of Gardena, Calif.

MORGANTON -- Dr. Jackson, 86, of Morganton, NC died Thursday, March 24, 2011 at the Burke Palliative Care Center. Born on February 3, 1925 in West Point, GA, he was the son of the late Brooks Rolin Jackson and Frances Freeman Jackson. During WWII, Dr. Jackson served with the U.S. Army's 36th Infantry and was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.
A graduate of the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine in 1952, he practiced in Newnan, GA and West Point, GA. He also had a private veterinary practice in Morganton from 1961 until 1972 during which time he also worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, from which he retired. Dr. Jackson was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and Catawba Valley Masonic Lodge #217.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Patricia Walburn Jackson; six brothers; and one sister.
Dr. Jackson is survived by two sons, Dr. Dan Jackson and wife, Debbie, of Cumberland, MD and Tom Jackson of Charlotte, NC; a daughter, Mary Jackson Rasnick of Morganton; a brother, Edmund Jackson of Tampa, FL; grandchildren, Dan 'Chip' Jackson, Jr. of Chapel Hill, NC, Katie J. Budris of Arlington, VA, Ashley Jackson of Little Rock, AR, Miller Jackson of Black Mountain, NC, and Carly Rasnick of Morganton.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 26, 2011 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center in Morganton, NC with Rev. Dr. Sydnor Thompson, III officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

My maternal great-grandmother Walburn was a redhead with an identical twin sister. Granny Alice lived to 100. Her sister Sue lived to 103. Alice had nine children, the same as my Jackson grandparents. Sue had eight. In the 50's, most of us still lived in the West Point-La Grange, GA, area. We had joint reunions every summer. There were often at least 200 people there. It was a great time, with fiddling, Banjo picking, and lots of singing. We set up a large revival tent on the Jackson farm.
I had a reddish tint to my hair, which is gone now. Granny's husband was a railroad engineer, was killed in a derailment on New Year's Day, 1900. His obituary stated " He even had an insurance policy ".

My Dad was part of the Allied invasion through Italy. He got as far as the Vosges Mountains in Eastern France. They were studying a map when his Lieutenant standing beside him was shot through the neck by a sniper. Dad fell to the ground, shot in the back. The last thing he heard was someone saying " He's hurt real bad ". Dad spent nine months at Walter Reed Hospital. The doctors said he would never walk again. He was determined to prove them wrong. He walked out of the hospital. In 1963, he developed an abscess in his back. At surgery, they removed pieces of his uniform. Surgery had been hastily performed in order to save his life. Dad was also a character. He pronounced multiple words wrong on purpose. The Vosges Mountains were Voss-Geez. Tucson was Tucksun. He was blessed with the gift of gab, and never met a stranger.

Alice had nine children, the same as my Jackson grandparents. Sue had eight. In the 50's, most of us still lived in the West Point-La Grange, GA, area. We had joint reunions every summer. There were often at least 200 people there. It was a great time, with fiddling, Banjo picking, and lots of singing. We set up a large revival tent on the Jackson farm.
I had a reddish tint to my hair, which is gone now. Granny's husband was a railroad engineer, was killed in a derailment on New Year's Day, 1900. His obituary stated " He even had an insurance policy ".
