Mother and Daddy were running a dairy at that time and they had a cream separator that separated the cream from the milk and it made lots of noise when in operation. Junior, as my brother was called, had to have slipped out of the house. Mother usually kept the door fastened but that morning, someone left it open and he [Robert, Jr.] got out. Junior had strayed to the end of the yard near a big tree.... The dog attacked Junior and had him on the ground.... Several doctors carried him [Robert, Jr.] to Montgomery for treatment. He was bitten so badly, it didn't help.... He lived 21 days after he was bitten. The doctors gave hime something to help him die easier.... It liked to kill my Daddy.... He [Robert, Jr.] followed Daddy around all the time, he would walk right under a horse's stomach if you didn't watch him.... My mother was in bed from it all.... Daddy said if Junior had had a dog along wigh him, the mad dog would have jumped the dog instead of Junior, so when Sue came along, Daddy got a big black sheppard dog named Joe. That dog followed Sue everywhere.... When I started to school, I was would be so frightened when I'd see a dog. Rabies was so bad back then.... I love to get out and take walks and it still frightens me terribly when dogs run out and back.

The following additional comments are by a reporter for The Anniston Star: MONDAY WAS NOT a very good day at the Anniston Star. The news came early that Lem Wallace, one of our pressmen, had died during the night. His death was unexpected and a shock. It also hurt deeply. Lem, who had worked here 28 years, was not a loud person. But he was a funny person. His humor, quiet and usually with a point, was the one thing most mentioned around The Star Monday morning. And, if you need a bottom line on the guy, it is this: Of all the people who work here at The Star, if you picked one person everyone in the building liked and respected, it would have been Lem Wallace. Those of you who knew Lem don't have to be told that. He was a rare and special person whom we loved... and already miss. Very much....
