Sir Nicholas Handloe

M, b. say 1242
  • Last Edited: 28 Jul 2001
  • (Deceased) Death*:
  • Biography*: Lord of the Manor of Street 41 Henry III. (1257), also of Handloe, Crundall and Shelford, co. Kent, obtained a charter of free warren of all his lands; with King Richard I. at the Siege of Acon in Palestine; with Sir Alured de Deu and Judge Henry de Bath in compiling Ordinances of Romney Marsh, remarkable at that early time for its seal of three leopards' faces. Ancient records show high ascent of the Lords of this family of Handloe; the name of this family continued until changed by his descendant Nicholas de Handloe in 1349, when he took his mother's name Burnell, she being Maud, the wife of Sir Philip Burnell, and the daughter of Richard, Earl of Arundell, Nicholas being heir of her accumulated estates.
