Accidental shot to self kills Collierville man at firing range -- Shooting at Arlington facility was apparent accidental firing of weapon
A Collierville man died Wednesday at a private Arlington-area shooting range, apparently from an accidental gunshot wound to the shoulder.
The victim was identified as Roy Thomas Latimer .
The Shelby County medical examiner's office will be asked to rule on the death, said Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Shular.
The incident occurred at the Memphis Sport Shooting Association gun range at 9428 Old Brownsville Road.
Shular said initial reports indicated the man shot himself while returning his weapon to a shoulder holster after firing at targets.
The bullet shattered a windshield of a van with two people inside. The people in the van saw a man slumped over on a chair in the range and called the Sheriff's Department.
Latimer, a resident of Halle Plantation in Collierville, was a member of the 1998 Leadership Collierville class. He worked for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance at the time.
The range is at the end of a winding, black-topped driveway just east of Canada Road and north of U.S. 70.
The shooting association, chartered in 1937, counts ! about 2,500 members.
The range has a 100-foot sporting clay tower, a handgun shooting range, six skeet fields, nine trap fields and a cowboy shooting range.

  • Biography*: 16 December 2019; From Lynn, Aug 2005: "I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering. I worked in the tire industry (BF Goodrich) during most of my working years. We lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Alabama and Brazil. I retired from BFG in 1987 while living in Tuscaloosa." I retired from B. F. Goodrich as Manager of Tire Tech. Dept.

    From Lynn, March 2008:
The Home Ice Co. was owned by a company in B'ham.,Al. Dad was manager there when I was born. In the early years, the ice was produced in 30 plus lbs. blocks. (the weight over the 300 was for scrap during cutting. All accounting was in 300 lbs. The ice was delivered on horse-drawn wagons which held six blocks (I think). The ice was delivered to residences as well as businesses including the dye house at Russell, hospital, etc. Later, the Co. purchased trucks. Dad retired in 1948 when I was married and I took the job. That's when Mom and Dad opened the Alex. City Floral. In fact, I made the drawings for the shop in 1947. I only worked a year as manager before attending The Univ. of AL. I worked in the summers cutting and selling ice off the platform during my early years (12-15). As far as competition from electric refrigerators, I don't remember much, because during the early 40's we would outsell our capacity, resulting in 100 block loads being trucked in from Sylacauga or B'ham.1
