  • (Deceased) Death*: 18 December 1841; Chambers Co., Alabama
  • Research Note*: 8 January 2005; In Jan 1822 the court "ordered that Martha Halsey have leave to sell 25 acres in Jasper Co. adjoining the heirs of John Henderson, it being the real estate of George Halsey, dec'd, to be sold for the benefit of the heirs of said dec'd." (Jasper Minutes 1-226)

In 1821 Martha "Holson," widow, won Lot 38 in the Second District of Monroe Co., later Pike Co. Soon thereafter she and the children moved to Pike Co. She was on the 1825 Tax Digest in Pike County as "Martha Halsey, widow." On the 1826 Tax Digest, William Holsey was the agent for Martha Holsey, suggesting that William was her son.
In Oct 1834 Martha sold part of Lot 38 to Edward McElroy with William Halsey as witness. (Pike Co. DB D-196) In Jan 1835 she sold the remainder of the lot to James K. Holsey, her son. (Pike Co. DB D-282)

Martha and children William, George Allen, and Martha, then moved to Chambers Co. AL, where widow Martha died in 1841.

William Halsey

  • Last Edited: 8 Jan 2005
  • Biography*: William was probably born in Bulloch Co, GA, and lived in Morgan, Putnam, Jasper and Pike Counties before moving to Chambers Co. AL in 1836. In February of that year he bought the SE fourth of the SE fourth of Sec. 4 in T22N, R26E, which is 40 acres about three miles NW of LaFayette, AL. By 1840 he appears to have moved closer to Standing Rock as he was near Benjamin L. Halsey on the census that year. No one his age was listed in his household, apparently an error. There were two males 15-20, females 20-30 and 50-60. This last was Martha Halsey, William's mother. In addition there were seven slaves. William married Eliza Brakefield in 1850. That year the census shows him with five slaves. The couple had six children between 1851 and 1862. Eliza died in Chambers Co. in 1882 and William in 1886. They are buried in a small family cemetery with William's mother, his infant child, and four others whose graves are unmarked.
