In 1903, one of Greensboro's most beloved citizens moved to the Green Community to set up a medical practice. He built his house shortly thereafter, at the corner of 9th Street and Gadsden Street. (The two-story white house was destroyed by fire on December 31, 2000.)

Dr. Gardner was one of the longest-serving town mayors, the first president of the Bank of Greensboro, and a long-time member of the Board of Public Instruction. His doctor's office was on the west side of Green Avenue, next to the present Greensboro Trading Company.

Upon Dr. Gardner's death in 1953, the town passed a resolution "in memorium of Dr. Otho Winton Gardner, who served the people of our state and community so well and faithfully for so many years…."
