Biography*: After the Civil War, John filed a claim with the Southern Claims Commission, for damages done to his land near Atlanta during the "unpleasantness." His letter reads in part: "On my place, near our little city, Genl. Sherman's forces had their Winter quarters, Hospital, & etc. - 202 1/2 acres of land, $7000.00 worth of improvements on it, besides timber, all of which was destroyed. While I can take the oath as to my losses, I CAN'T as to my LOYALTY, for I was a very Disloyal Subject at that time." Needless to say his claim was rejected.

John was a bar keeper in Atlanta in 1860, and was recently married. John was a turnkey and guard at the Fulton County Jail after the Civil War, and on the 1870 census. In 1880, he was one of two Assistant Jailors at the Fulton County Jail, and he and his wife lived on the premises.

(Enlisted) War*: 31 March 1862; Weatherford, Parker Co., Texas; Thomas H. Wise enlisted as a private in Company E, 19th Regiment, Texas Cavalry, on 31 March 1862. He was from Weatherford, Parker County, Texas, west of Dallas. He was five feet, ten inches tall, and had hazel eyes and black hair. He was 28 years old, and thus born in 1834, which agrees with census records. His Civil War record does not extend beyond 1862, and there is no mention of his death.

19th Cavalry Regiment was organized by Colonel N.M. Buford during the spring of 1862 with about 850 men. Many of the men were recruited at Dallas, Tyler, and Hillsboro, and in Ellis and Dallas counties. The unit was attached to Hawes', G.W. Carter's, Flourney's, W. Steele's, and W.H. Parsons' Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department. During Marmaduke's Missouri Raid, the unit reported 5 killed, 19 wounded, and 9 missing. It went on to skirmish in Arkansas, then was involved in the operations against Banks' Red River Campaign. Later it was again active in Arkansas and ended the war at Marshall, Texas, where it disbanded in May, 1865. Colonel Nathaniel M. Buford, Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin W. Watson, and Major Joel T. Davis were in command.
(Deceased) Death*: before 1870; Texas
Biography*: Very little is known about the remaining sons of Zachariah Wise. One or more of them may have been killed in the Civil War. One is said gone to the Red River Valley in Texas, where he was murdered. No records of this event have yet been found in TX.

This Thomas is not found in the 1870 or 1880 census, and so may have died in the Civil War, or shortly thereafter from injuries. His Civil War record does not mention his death, however, and mentions nothing beyond 1862.³
