Mae Rutherford b. ca 1913; Groom=Robert Edward Rutherford1 - Death*: 14 June 19571
- Biography*: Little is known about this family. Claudia was divorced from Robert "Bob" Rutherford after many years of marriage and she remarried but had no more children. Her second husband was called "Blackie" and that is all this family historian knows.
The son of Wilby Rutherford, Terry Rutherford, has furnished his family information. Wilby was married twice. His first wife died of cancer. To this union was born one child, Wilma Ruth. She too, died young with cancer. She lived in LA. His second marriage was to Irma Daisy McClendon. She was born 3 Feb. 1919 in Rapides Parish, Louisiana in the town of LeCompte. Her church affiliation was Baptist. She was the daughter of George Sleet McLendon and Emma Ruch. She is still living in LA at this writing. Issue of Irma and Wilby's marriage was one son, Terry Bruce Rutherford. He was born 3 July 1946 at Levelland, Hockley Co., Texas. He married Janet Ruth Jones. She was the daughter of Floyd Wesley Jones and Alice Raus Jones. She was born 8 Jan. 1946 at Tulsa, OK. Her church affiliation is Baptist. In 1982 Terry Bruce and family were living in Alexandria, LA, Rapides Parish, LA and Terry is a program administrator for a State Corrections Agency. His father, Wilby, spent his working career in the oilfield, primarily as an oil well driller. His father before him worked the early oilfields in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma.
Robert "Bob" Rutherford, father of Wilby, told the following story to this family historian's father regarding an incident in his oil field career. He hauled heavy oil field equipment by wagon & horses before the advent of trucks and tractors. "While working a contract with the Magnolia Oil Company in a new producing field in Arkansas, I became acquainted with a young man that owned a forty acre farm right in the center of this oil field. Quite often this young farmer would visit me when I was tending my horses at the close of the working day. One evening when I came from work to the place where I fed, watered and kept my teams of horses, this young man was waiting for me. He seemed nervous about something. Almost his first words of greetings were 'Mr. Rutherford, can you come over to my house after supper?' I asked him what was the occasion. He declined to tell me saying he and his wife had something they wanted to talk to me about. I told him I would be at his house about dark. He and his wife lived in a one room cabin with no children. When I entered the cabin, although sparsely furnished with a table, one bed, two chairs and a cooking stove, it was spotlessly clean. His wife was dressed in her best with her hair combed back and tightly fastened. She was sitting on the edge of the bed. I was invited to take one of the chairs and her husband took the other. After hurriedly greeting me and inviting me to sit, he blurted out, 'Mr. Rutherford, how much is a million dollars?' I had found out previously that neither he nor his wife could read or write and had no understanding of the outside world. I asked why he wanted to know how much was a million dollars. He replied 'The Magnolia Oil Company has offered us a million dollars for our 4.0 acres of land.' I told them the best I could what I thought a million dollars was. I'm sure it was an inadequate description. At least, it was a lot of money in the first decade of the 1900s. I never knew whether he sold his farm for 1 million dollars or not, as I moved to a new area the next day. However, if he sold his farm I have often wondered if he held on to his money. However, this situation was frequent during the early oil booms in Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana where poverty stricken owners of farms so unproductive they could hardly eke out a living, became overnight millionaires, when oil was discovered underneath their seemingly worthless farms."
According to family stories, Violet, the eldest surviving to adulthood issue of Claudia Moon and her husband Bob Rutherford, was a beautiful woman, with deep blue eyes and blond hair and a very talented singing voice. This family historian knows nothing of her personal life. Their second daughter, Thelma, was a beautiful brunette with large dark eyes. This writer vaguely remembers his Aunt Claudia. She was small in stature, about five feet 2. When young, she had dark hair and black eyes. There is a close facial resemblance to her sisters, although my mother was a blue eyed blond with golden hair when she was young. The Moon girls were all known to be unusually attractive when young. None became overweight in old age.
Ray Rutherford, the second son died in early manhood. He never married.
Mae, the youngest, married Jacob Edge. To this union were born: Bill, the oldest, Mary, Carol, Jim, and Linda.1
