  • (Deceased) Death*: 1 April 2007; Lousiville, Jefferson Co., Georgia; From Joe Strickland:

On April 3, 2007, I buried my brother. Everyone knows what a wosie I am when it comes to emotional situations, but there are a few things that I would like to share with this experience. In addition, there are several recollections that are vivid in my mind.
I was five when Paul joined the navy in 1939. I remember standing on the platform at the train station in Hamlet, North Carolina, saying goodbye to a brother that I never knew until after the war. Before the war, I can only remember Paul getting a "T" model for his high school graduation, and Dad making him take it back for some unknown reason.
Like me, when I joined the service, Mother did not want him to go; but Dad seemed to know that it was time for him to become independent of parents. The next time I saw him was after Pearl Harbor sometime during the month of December , 1941, or January, 1942. When he came home, he would not talk about what happened to him at Pearl on December 7, 1941; but I recalled that he was so loud talking that a neighbor came from the end of the block to ask him to be quite because they had a baby trying to sleep. Paul was on leave because his ship had had the front end blown off by a mini-sub; and he was waiting reassignment while his ship, The USS Hellena, was being repaired. The Navy Department assigned him to Norfolk, Virginia, and later to Morocco.
On that dreadful day when we came under attack, Paul later told me that he was up and getting ready to go to church (still in his under shorts). He had heard all the noise going on topside, so he decided to see for himself. About the time he had reached the upper deck, a Zero was shooting at his ship. He said that he literally dove down the stairs, grabbed a life jacket, and manned a machine gun, still in his shorts. It was alleged that his ship had to back from Pearl to San Diego to go into dry dock.
When our father was operated on in 1941, the USO helped Paul get an emergency leave because we did not know if Dad would live (Dad had cancer of the larynx which there were only ten survivors with the kind of operation being performed on him). Although I do not remember seeing Paul at the time, Mother and I visited Lucy, Paul’s wife, in Norfolk when their oldest son, James Earnest, was born . From this point on, we did not bond as brothers until after Paul and Lucy moved to Louisville, Georgia.
Because Paul had been a volunteer fireman, a fire truck lead the entourage from the church to the cemetery. In the casket my brother wore a full dress naval uniform with a thirty-second degree mansions’ apron tied to the bottom. On the sleeve he had eight strips, representing 48 years in the Navy -- thirty-six on active duty. He was a Master Chief Petty Officer. His medals included 13 major battles, one where he lost his ship in the Kuala Gulf. One of two parts of the ceremony that really bothered me was the closing of the casket which meant closure to me. The other part was a navy military funeral at the grave site where they played taps, folded the American Flag draped across the coffin, and presented it to Lucy. They also had a twenty-one gun salute. My brother is one of those unsung heroes who dedicated his life for our freedom, and his community honored him with a fitting funeral. Whenever you see someone who is a member of the Military, please take the time to thank them for their service and our freedom.1,2

  • Biography*: 11 June 2007; From Carol Harkins Nichols, June 2007:

You asked about my memories of my mother--no, I have no memory of her at all. I was born Sept 3, 1929 and she died early in 1931, I believe. I've done a good bit of research on her family, her name was Hazel Holland, but got discouraged and quit some time ago. At that time I contacted her only living sister for info, but she didn't seem to have much about their original location. My grandfather was a Baptist minister, so they had lived in several places. I remember Daddy taking Joyce and me to see our grandmother when she was on her death bed in Georgiana, AL. ....

Joyce was born in Oct 1926 so you would have thought she would have remembered our mother, but she didn't. Clyde's only sister lived in B'ham and we were with her until he remarried, so she always felt we partly belonged to her. She had 2 kids close to our ages, so I'm sure it was difficult for her, but she never let us fill that way when she discussed it later.

I traced the Holland family to Brooks and Thomas Counties in S. GA in 1830 but could never get beyond that or figure out how they got there.
