    Dear Fellow Researchers,

My Johns ancestors were involved in the tobacco trade between London and Colonial Virginia from about 1600-1650. The progenitor of the family seems to have been William Johns who operated a firm called Motley and Johns which owned a ship called the "Unity". In 1585 a William Johns christened a son, Richard Johns at St. Margaret's Westminster. Later in the early 1600s the following Johns individuals turned up as tobacco importers and trade goods exporters in London. William, Richard, Roger, Jack Robert, John known to be Jack Robert's brother, and Thomas. This first Richard Johns I believe to be the son of William christened at St Margaret's. Richard Sr. sailed on the ship "Mayflower" owned by her Master Peter Andrewes, in her voyage of 1633-34 to Virginia from Gravesend. On this voyage Roger Johns and Jacob Johns accopanied Richard Sr. Richard returned to London on the same voyage with a cargo of tobacco. Roger stayed on in Northampton Co., VA and remained there as agent until his death in abt. 1652. Roger was a bachelor and had no known offspring. Richard Sr. remained active in the tobacco trade and meanwhile had some children. His wife's name is unknown, but in a deposition he gave in 1634 before the High Court of the Admiralty regarding his treatment during the afoementioned voyage of the "Mayflower", he acknowledged his age to be 42 and his residence to be St. Ethelburga Parish, Bishopsgate, London. In about 1650 Captain John Fox, set sail for Virginia with a Richard Johns and a Jane Fox aboard his ship. These two, Richard and Jane, turned up as headrigts in two recorded land grants in Virginia. I believe this Richard to be the son of Richard Sr. and we know that Jane Fox was the daughter of Captain John Fox. Not too long after Richard and Jane arrived in Virginia they were married and produced nine children. Richard left a will recorded in King William County, VA in 1702/03. Richard and Jane became the progenitors of many of the Johns families of Virginia.

Captain John Fox is reported to be the son of Thomas Fox, a member of the London Co. of 1608-09. He is said to be descended from the Fox Family of Great Missenden, Bucks Co., England. His wife is believed to be Elizabeth Pickernell dau. of John Pickernell. This information was found in "Genealogies of Virginia Families".

I would like to hear from anyone who can verify or disprove any of this information. Does anyone know if the London Co of 1608-09 kept a record of membership? Any help would be gratefully received.

  • Research Note*: 26 October 1999; From Robert R. Johns:

The subject of the antecedents of Jane Fox Johns has been somewhat controversial. There are several different Fox pedigrees form different sources with slightly different connections. I have done a lot of research on this subject and have drawn my own conclusion which may not be accurate and probably don't reflect the consensus of other researchers whom I know. I am copying them on this msg to let them know my final feelings on the subject.

I am copying below excerpts from "Memorial to Henry Fox, Gentleman, of `Huntington`, King William County, Virginia." by George H. S. King, published on pgs 713-725 of "Genealogies of Virginia Families" vol I A-Ge. This work comes close to confirming the results of additional research that I have done in the image files of the Colonial Records of the Library of Virginia, "English Duplicates of Lost Virginia Records" by Louis des Cognets, Jr., and "Virginia Gleanings" by Lothrop Withington.

pg. 715: (Title) "Captain John Fox, The Immigrant". The founder of the Fox family in Virginia was Captain John Fox who commanded several trading vessels plying between England and Virginia. It is not positively ascertained that he lived in Virginia, but the writer is inclined to believe he did. ( As am I. RJ ) He was a member of the Fox family of Great Missenden Parish in Bucks County, England whose coat of arms appear on the memorial to Henry Fox. It seems more than likely that Captain John Fox was the son of Thomas Fox, a member of the London Company in 1608, who resided in London, England.

The minutes of the Council and General Court of the Colony of Virginia, evince this court order:

"At a Court held on October 14, 1625, being prsent Sr. Francis Wyatt, Knight, Governor, etc. Captain Francis West, Captain Roger Smith, Captain Ralph Hamer, Captain Samuel Matthews,Mr. William Cleyborne. It is ordered yt the p,vost Marshall shall receave all such debts and tobacco as shall be dew to Elizabeth Ffox, widow, and to take the charge of sendinge of the same to her unto England, and receave bill of ladinge for ye same, and to pay such debts as ffox did owe in this country."

The same manuscript page 76, records this order, dated 28 November 1625:

"Yt it is ordered yt the pvost marshall shall give a discharge to the purser of the Elizabeth for the receipte of these goods wch he hath receaved of John Fox and John Pickernell, who died at sea, And to take charge of sendinge the tobacco made of these goods into England" ( The Virginia Colonial Records Data Base confirms that Captain John Fox was the master of the ship "Constant Elizabeth" as late as 1664. RJ )

"It thus appears that Mrs, Elizabeth Fox was the widow of one who was intimately associated with the affairs of the Colony, and therefor Thomas Fox of the London Co. The fact that her husband's name is not specified is evidence of this association, hence there was no need to specify it". (I would have preferred to see her husband's name specified. I have chcked a copy of the 1609 Charter of the Virginia Company of London. The name of Thomas Fox is listed as a share holder, RJ)

"At the time of his father's death, in 1625 John Fox was a young man, sailing on one of his father's ships, the "Elizabeth", named for his mother. He also acted as agent for his father, Thomas Fox, in trading with the Colony". (This is verified by many records in the LVA Colonial Records Files which have Captain John Fox sailing in the "Constant Elizabeth" as master 1654, and various other ships as master the "Thomas and Ann" July 1655, the "Mary" 1676".

It appears by these references, quoted by Mr George H. S. King, that John Pickernell, who died at sea on a voyage with John Fox to Virginia, was the father of Elizabeth Pickernell Fox, who was the mother of John Fox and the wife of Thomas Fox of the London Company. (RJ)2

John Daniel

M, b. say 1615
  • Last Edited: 17 Feb 2018
  • Birth*: say 1615; England
  • (Groom) Marriage*: say 1635; Bride=Ann Jones
  • Research Note*: 9 January 2005; Tom Valentine's original comments with regard to the probable liaison between John Daniel of London and Anne Jones are certainly not cast in stone, however, the probabilities that this John Daniel is the father of Anne's son Thomas have led him to the beliefs that are quoted or proposed on my web page....

    1. We have no doubt that Thomas Daniel of Isle of Wight County, Virginia who died in 1709 is, indeed, the son of Anne Jones as mentioned in her Will. Remember, she specifically stated that her son Thomas Daniel was in "Virginia across the seas".

    2. Of course, we cannot state with such authority that John Daniel of London was indeed the father of Anne's son, Thomas however, a very careful examination of this John's Last Will & Testament, along with the proximity of his residence to that of Anne Jones and the fact that they were both of St. Clement Danes is, to us, very strong evidence. In his Will, John does not state that his son Thomas is in Virginia however, this is certainly not conclusive. There certainly is a Thomas Daniel from St. Clement Danes on the list of Royalist prisoners transported to Virginia in 1657 by Cromwell. When
John Daniel died in 1665, he may not have known just exactly where his son had gone.

    3. In the estate settlement of the Estate of Susan Daniel, widow of John Daniel, Thomas is not mentioned, only her son, Charles Daniel (who, by the way is also mentioned in the Will of John Daniel in 1665). This further bolsters our belief that Thomas was not the son of Susan but her late husband's son by Anne Jones.

    4. Tom has been deciphering the Wills of every single "Daniel" in the vicinity of St. Clement Danes and all parishes within a 25 mile radius and thus far has not turned up any further references to a "Thomas Daniel".

    5. He also found in studying the Wills in England and the colonies in the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th centuries that illegitimate children were frequently mentioned in these Wills without the mother being named. Note, Thomas was indeed specifically named in the Will of John Daniel so that he could legally inherit. In Tom's review of the laws of England, as promulgated under King Henry VIII and confirmed under the Commonwealth of Oliver Cromwell and King Charles II under the restoration act, it was not necessary for the mother of an illegitimate child to be named in order for that child to inherit from the father or vice versa.

    6. "Jones" could certainly have been the married name of Anne at her death in 1679 and her son, Thomas Daniel could have been born when she was single, as her age would indicate. In her Will, she said that she was a widow and under modern terminology that would indicate that her late husband was a "Jones". If she had stayed single all of her life (and was indeed the sister of John Jones whose children were named in her Will) she would have probably passed herself off as a widow with a son (Thomas Daniel) whose husband had died when the son was an infant.; Principal=Ann Jones1

If she had stayed single all of her life (and was indeed the sister of John Jones whose children were named in her Will) she would have probably passed herself off as a widow with a son (Thomas Daniel) whose husband had died when the son was an infant.; Principal=John Daniel1
