    We really don't have much further back on Benjamin and Joseph's lineage. We do have them in the 1850 Tallapoosa Co AL census (Twp 20, 448-448, Oct 1850) Joseph 50 farmer SC; Benjamin S. 21 farmer GA; Sterling T. 19 farmer GA; Sarah 15 GA; Eliza 14 GA; Joseph 12 GA; Stephen W. 11 AL; Frances 7 AL. There is also a November 1850 reading (don't have the particulars as a descendant forwarded it to me) which shows this reading: Joseph Smith 50 farmer GA; Benjamin 21 farmer GA; Starling T. 20 farmer GA; Sarah 18 GA; Eliza 15 GA; Stephen 11 AL; Frances 8 AL.
     I have always used the October reading as it appears that Joseph gave the info as it seems more accurate. It does show us that he was born in SC and that they came to AL about 1839 which follows the historical info about Indian troubles in that area prior to that.
     The wife, Sarah, was already deceased by this time and we found Joseph and Sarah Springfield's marriage in 6 Nov 1828 in Butts Co GA. Also, in 1829, a Sterling Smith married Sarah's sister, Rebecca. I have several generations of the Springfield line and can dig that out for you...it is a tricky one to find as many researchers have the wrong parents for these girls. They are Aaron and Elizabeth Potts Springfield. He died while the children were fairly young and Elizabeth had to raise them alone as she didn't remarry.
     We believe that Sterling Smith was a brother to Joseph and there was also a Benjamin Smith and others in the area. The Smiths in Butts Co GA were: 1828 tax list: Benjamin, Joseph, Robert, William, and John G. so your lineage might stem from one of these. We found our Joseph on the 1830 Coweta Co GA census with a male child under 5 years (probably Benjamin) and a male and female in the 20-30 bracket (Joseph probably born abt 1800) but there is another female in the 5-10 bracket which we think was a younger sister of Sarah's. We looked over a lot of court records for Butts and Coweta Counties but couldn't find the orphan court records or any other useful info. I had hints that Joseph was from Greenville, SC and we pursued some records from there, too, and didn't find much except the Sterling name is prominent among Smith families there.
