  • (Deceased) Death*: 1 December 2010; Alabaster, Shelby Co., Alabama; Florence Pennington Mitchell, 90, of Alabaster, Ala., passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2010.
The graveside funeral service was at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, at Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham, Ala.
Born in Tuscumbia, Ala., Florence was a resident of Sheffield, Ala., and a member of First Baptist Church for many years.
As a resident of Orange, Calif., she was a member of Crystal Cathedral Church.
Florence graduated from Sheffield High School in 1939 and attended Alabama College for Women (University of Montevallo) and Florence State Teachers College (University of North Alabama).
She was active in preserving historical documents as a member of the Tennessee Valley Historical Society, and she dedicated efforts to advance the legacy of Helen Keller and Maud McKnight Lindsay, who established Alabama's First Free Kindergarten in 1898.
Florence promoted Keller and Lindsay's inductions into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame at Judson College.
As a wife and mother, Florence was an avid reader, loved nature, was active in the local garden clubs and Colbert County Medical Auxiliary and enjoyed hosting and coordinating school events.
She and her second husband, professional pilot Bradley Brewer Sasser, co-owned an airport. Yet, she found time to eagerly look for ways to improve the world around her by helping those less fortunate and recycling before it was popular.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to those who lovingly cared for Florence in Alabama and California.
Survivors include her three children, Bradley Brewer Sasser Jr. (Sheila), of Cumming, Ga., Barbara Pennington Lancaster (Mike), of Florence, Ala., and Sharon Mitchell Kimbrough (Thomas), of Pelham, Ala.; three grandchildren, Bradley Brewer Sasser III (Melony), Shannon Sasser Collier (Eric) and Madison Kimbrough; and two great-grandchildren, David Alexander Sasser and William James Sasser.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents, Glover Franklin Pennington and Nannie Lee Parrish Pennington; husbands, Major Fred Miles Hampton, Bradley Brewer Sasser and James Albert Mitchell; an infant child, Fred Miles Hampton Jr.; and siblings, Valerie Inez Sibley Price, Alice Lurene Reynolds Johnson, Glover Franklin Pennington Jr., Alvin Otto Pennington and Nannie Lee King.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that tax-deductible memorial gifts be made to Maud Lindsay Kindergarten, in care of Briggs Tax Service, Attn: Lois, 2310 Huntsville Road, Florence, AL 35630, or give to Maud Lindsay Free Kindergarten, 1802 Cole Ave., Florence, AL 35630-4919, or gifts may go to help Ivy Green, Helen Keller's Birthplace, 300 North Commons West, Tuscumbia, AL 35674.

  • (Groom) Marriage*: July 1941; Bride=Florence Maxwell Pennington
  • (Deceased) Death*: December 1942
  • Biography*: 7 January 2013; Fred was a major in the Air Force and was killed when his plane crashed on a training mission.

From Barbara Pennington: Bradley Sasser, JR (my brother) was able to get copies of the crash report from VA Military records and shared with me what the papers contained. He actually died as a result of talking off at night, in bad weather, when he was advised not to do so by the commander in charge at the military airport in Louisiana. Search planes were sent out and nothing was found. His plane went down in the swamps of Louisiana and was not found for 5 days after the crash. A fisherman came upon the wreckage about 1 mile in the swamps and the only way to recover the wreckage was by boat. The 4 other members of the plane wreckage were identified by clothing and jewelry they wore at the time of take off. The investigation into the crash took over 5 months to complete. The crash was considered bad judgment, bad weather and not being able to navigate the plane at night.1
